To ask if Father Christmas brings main presents or just stocking?

When I was little it was just the stocking from Santa and I was very grateful to my parents for the main present. I just wondered what people are doing and if Santa's bringing EVERYTHING or just one present or just stocking...
This year DS is very interested in the idea of Santa/ Father Christmas, so need to start as we mean to go on. Smile

Stockings. As has been said before, when he brings everything children don't understand why one gets a playstation and the other, a small gift. I really don't agree with making friends or family say their presents are from Santa though.

2beautifulbabs · 06/12/2019 10:11

When me and my DB were little all our main presents were from Santa and we had presents from family

I'm unsure what to do for my own Dcs my DD is still very young to really understand what's going on My DS is 2.8 years old they have a Santa sack each where all their presents go in and stockings and separate from family gifts so may end up like me and my DB although my DH had one present off Santa and the rest of his mum growing up so unsure really what traditions we will follow

Santa brings small things in our house. I saw a facebook meme doing the rounds a few years ago pointing out that if one child gets something small and thinks Santa brought another child all kinds of wonderful things, it just looks like even Santa discriminates. This article shows the post.

The post really struck a chord with me. So Santa is very much a bit player in our house. Santa puts some sweets and small things in a sack* and the big presents come from us.

*DP came home before DS1's first Christmas all excited about the beautiful red velour sack with Disney characters on it that he had bought. I didn't have the heart to say, no, we're going to use a cut up pair of tights because that's what I had. So the ridiculously large sacks are laid out empty and found filled in the morning.

Everything we bought for our son came from Santa. I let him enjoy the magic until he was old enough and worked out he was not real and then he knew where they came from anyway. I didn’t feel the need for him to know we were involved, and he never questioned it cause it was just ‘magic’. That’s how I remember it being done as a kid 🤷‍♀️

Other people’s presents to the kids came from them so he could thank them individually.

RedHelenB · 06/12/2019 10:35

I think if kids are questioning the value of gifts then they are too old for Father Christmas. I do remember my dd saying they wondered why they had 2 different types of wrapping paper in their sacks though!

blackteasplease · 06/12/2019 10:36

Santa brings most of the presents that I buy.

It’s much vaguer in my house than other people’s houses!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 06/12/2019 10:39

Father Christmas just gives them their stocking presents in our house, he’s merely a posh delivery man for the presents under the tree Xmas Smile.

blackteasplease · 06/12/2019 10:40

We have some that I and family buy, but then send off to Santa to deliver too!

This is what I think too. I was poor growing up and never questioned Fatner Christmas buying more expensive toys for my friends. By the time this was on my radar I was no longer a believer.

AVT5 · 06/12/2019 11:27

The kids put a letter under the tree asking for one present (a medium sized present because he has to buy for everyone so If it's too big you risk not getting it!). Santa takes the letter at some point in the following day or 2.
We get the rest of the presents and stocking's.

FizzyIce · 06/12/2019 11:27

1 main present from Father Christmas and the stocking .
The rest are from us

DappledThings · 06/12/2019 12:16

For me it's not about credit it's just what we always did. FC only ever brought stockings for my brother and me and for DH and his siblings. That was just his role.

Neither of us had ever heard of him bringing anything else, or of presents other than stocking not appearing till Christmas morning.

spiderlight · 06/12/2019 12:20

Stocking and one biggish present (but not the main present).

InglouriousBasterd · 06/12/2019 12:23

Stocking and the present she put on her list.

Growing up it was just stockings and I wondered why I’d write a letter to FC and he wouldn’t bring the thing I asked for, but my parents might! So I shifted it to one present (this year a doll).

B0bbin · 06/12/2019 19:01

Thanks for all your responses! We're probably going with just stocking from FC this year... thanks for all the ideas and thoughts xx

We never had stockings. I suspect this is a British thing?

All gifts under the tree were from Santa. They were unwrapped. We got gifts from godparents too. They were wrapped and under the tree.

For my own DCs we did what the ILs did - a special Christmas Eve dinner followed by opening of gifts from godparents and a Secret Santa among the cousins. All of those gifts were wrapped, under the tree. Santa gifts were placed under the tree that night and discovered in the morning.

Blowandgo · 06/12/2019 20:30

I had a stocking and Im Irish.

ViaSacra · 06/12/2019 20:31

Just stockings in our family.

NamechangeProtectIdentity · 06/12/2019 20:33

All presents on xmas morning under the tree plus stockings from FC. Gifts from family members.
They are only believers for a few short years, happy for FC to have the credit.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/12/2019 20:33

Nothing in my house comes from Santa! DS knows that all the presents come from family and friends, Santa just delivers them for us.

SnowyChristmasTree · 06/12/2019 20:35

In our house Santa just brings the stocking presents. Which are generally a handful of fairly cheap items. This is what my parents always did.

However it did always confuse me as a child because I'd write to Santa every year and ask for something really good like a dolls house, but instead I'd get some pencils and sweets!

Main presents and stocking.

Why one else gives you from the themselves eg grandparents etc

Cross posted, I actually think this is a great idea. Stocking plus one main present.

RedCatTail · 06/12/2019 20:40

Santa brings one present and a stocking in my house. Everything else is from me/the people who chose to give them.
