Have you gone interrailing as an adult?

We want to go interrailing next Summer with our DS. I haven't been since I was a student, decades ago!

Can anyone recommend any companies that help organise this for you? Or any tips at all! Thanks

I'd love to do this with my kids.

Have a look at seat61.com for advice.

I have not done this yet but would love to (planning for 2-3 years time).

Do it. Get 1st class passes, the extra cost is worth it and let your journey take you where it will. It's so easy through various booking websites to book hotels at short notice - balance this against sleeper trains, OBB (Austrian Railways) are the best. Spend time in advance researching doable legs and be careful of excessive booking fees for some high speed trains. Enjoy!

Planning this for next summer kids 11 and 13

Haven’t been inter railing but have done some train based trips including travelling around Switzerland by train - flying into Geneva and out of Zurich and travelling to Hong Kong by train from our local U.K. station then flying home. I would love to do something like this with DS. Seat61.com is a great resource.

Yes I did with my DD when she was 4. It's all very easy these days really. It's worth checking whether you really want a pass or whether it would be cheaper to book tickets. Advance tickets are often cheap and if you want to book hotels you need a plan anyway.

Oh, thanks so much.

It's great to hear so much positivity for the idea.

Do it! Something I am considering before DD goes to school

OhioOhioOhio · 06/12/2019 12:08

Oh wow. I thought this was more of a holiday for teenagers. Is it suitable for primary aged children?

Thelowquietsea · 06/12/2019 15:06

My son is at primary school - I think he'll love the train journeys

Omg. I'm so excited by the very idea of this. What kind of budget and time do you have?

NeckoProsecco · 07/12/2019 11:41

I've done interrailing as a couple, and did a long train journey as part of a holiday last year, with two small children. They loved it!

Deutsche Bahn's website is very useful, as is Man In Seat 61. If you're travelling in Eastern Europe then the national rail operators vary in terms of their websites being user friendly. Polrail are good.

"Get 1st class passes, the extra cost is worth it "

Really? Many continental countries have trains whose 2nd class carriages look like our 1st class ones. It would be a complete waste of money in Belgium, for example.
