Rubbish is the cinema 😱

I went to the cinema today for the first time in a long time.

And at the end, I was gobsmacked at the amount of rubbish just left everywhere.

I'm talking popcorn...empty drinks, spilt ice creams, hotdog buns, sweet packets..... It was horrible :/

Is this normal? AIBU to think this is unacceptable?

I wouldn’t leave stuff all over the floor by the way, but yeah I leave the empties by our seats as requested. Just like if they didn’t make that request I would put it all in the bin myself. Either way I can’t get worked up about it.

Celebelly · 05/12/2019 20:04

Yeah our cinema says to leave the rubbish too. Some mess is inevitable - overfilled popcorn bags being manoeuvred around in the dark, for example! We just leave our stuff sitting beside our seats as asked.

I hate it. It gives a terrible message to children that someone else will tidy up their shit for them.

Can we give kids more credit please. There are times when you should clean and times when you don’t need to, they are more than capable of understanding this. Do you get them to take the plates back to the kitchen when you’re in a restaurant too?

Our nearest cinema has no bins at all in any of the public areas so there is no choice but to leave it anyway.

ChalkieWhite · 05/12/2019 20:10

'There is no choice, but to leave it'. Ugh ? The choice is you take it with you.

thatguiltyfeeling · 05/12/2019 20:11

None of my local cinemas say to leave rubbish! And if the OP didn't see any sings, and there wasn't an ad before the film I'm assuming she isn't meant to either?
The rubbish is a real problem though (if it's not meant to be left of course). I was horrified when I went once and a couple spilt a bag of popcorn, but without even trying to pick up any of it or the bag the man just walked off to get another one! We always leave quite quickly so as we walked past I said really loudly about how awful it is when some people treat public buildings like pig sties!

christmassymcchristmas · 05/12/2019 20:12

My god. It's on the screen at the start, leave your rubbish by your seat!

lynsey91 · 05/12/2019 20:44

My local cinema definitely does NOT tell you to leave your rubbish but lots of people do

My local cinema is a Vue. They tell you to leave your rubbish next to your seat. There are no bins for customers because they're not needed, the staff bring a wheelie bin in with them at the end of the showing and then take it away again once they've collected up the rubbish.

Milanimilani · 05/12/2019 22:38

I don’t know about a cleaner losing a job if people didn’t take their rubbish. When I worked in a cinema, it was the regular staff. People always say cleaners need work to do to excuse their own laziness. There is always plenty to do even without people acting as slobs.

Jas1985 · 05/12/2019 22:49

I can't speak for other cinemas, but I worked at an odeon and we definitely didn't recycle. There was barely time to fling everything in a bin bag let alone sort it all between showings (not helped by people desperate to get in 30 minutes before the trailers had even started, I once had someone turn up to be let in when the previous showing was still going).

Agree with the general point about people being disgusting in the cinema though. I'd often clean up peoples spit from the floor next to the seats, and once found a dirty nappy sitting on one of the tables people put their food on. In general yes it does make it easier if people leave their rubbish for staff to collect, but a lot of people take that to mean they can leave the place however they like because there are staff to clean it up.
