To not bother working for this language school again ?

Luckily it's not my main job or i'd be up shit creek. I'm employed on a casual basis at a language school which offers English classes to adults.
In the summer holidays, I was given 6 weeks' worth of classes, about 5 hours of lessons Monday to Friday.
2 weeks into these, I received an email from the manager saying that they had had to give my classes to the 'permanent' teachers who didn't have enough hours, so my classes for the next 4 weeks were suddenly gone from one day to the next.

Then on another occasion, they had emailed me asking if I wanted to cover 2 weeks of evening classes. I said yes, and then 2 weeks or so later walked into the school. They looked confused and asked why I was there. I said to teach my evening classes I was covering. They said they had given them to someone else because they "hadn't heard anything from me recently."

I'd said yes (and they definitely received the email). If they weren't sure, why didnt they check with me ?

The final straw came this week. I'd been given 4 weeks of 2 evening classes per week which I was happy about, as the extra money was very helpful.

Did my first class the other night, and got an email today from the director. A Chinese lady in my class had complained about my lesson, saying that there was 'too much discussion' and she didn't like that we watched a video, and refused to come back to my lessons.

The director told me she was just a very fussy student and not to take it personally, but that unfortunately they had to now give that contract to another teacher, so again I am left with no classes.

So this has happened 3 times. I know it's a zero hours contract but I find their practice unprofessional for something that claims to be a highly renowned language school. Should I give my notice in ? Just getting fed up with them, highly unreliable. Does this seem common practice ?

Three strikes and they’re out! They sound awful. Do they treat other staff like this or is this the treatment doled out to zero hour staff?

Personally, I operate a three strikes and you are out policy. (Also a language teacher)Although I haven’t encountered this before, I have experienced seriously crappy management. It’s the Peter Principle in operation and it is rife in schools.

Be grateful it is not your main job and move on. It is not you, it is them.

As far as I know this is just to casual staff. I do feel really bad for people whose main job is a zero hours contract, it's so unpredictable. But yeah, this is not on

Adorex,

These sort of 'agreements' (I use the term because often there is no contract of employment, just an agreement that you will undertake certain assignments as and when the company allocate them to you) are heavily weighted towards the company and, in my experience, the company will always prioritise client opinion and preferences (after all, they pay the fees).

I agree with others. You are better off without this arrangement. I hope you find something that will truly appreciate your skills and commitment soon.

Yes, they sound like terrible employers and you’d be better off somewhere else.

As an aside, culturally, generally Chinese students expect to be taught in a ‘sage on the stage’ format. There is the expectation that the teacher will stand and impart their knowledge to the class for the allotted time. I work at a uni with a lot of Chinese students and we get sometimes get complaints when the lectures are not in that format.

You gave them more opportunity than I would.

Too much... discussion in a language class? Wtf? Language classes are all about discussion! Wow.

YANBU OP this is unacceptable behaviour from these employers. Zero hours contracts are pretty shitty but this is taking it to an extreme. I hope you can find something else to supplement instead!

Damntheman · 06/12/2019 09:16

I didn't know that about sage on the stage @LellyMcKelly thank you for the insight!

Marmablade · 06/12/2019 09:18

Who on earth has voted for the OP being unreasonable? How much more of this shit would you take then?

slashlover · 06/12/2019 09:23

If you don't want to work for them again then don't.
