AIBU to buy Christmas chocolate last year?

I have done it a few years running now. After christmas all of the chocolate coins go for 10p and the chocolate Santas and reigndeer are 25p so I buy enough for my kids and other children's I buy for.
I check the dates and last years say they are okay until April 2020.
It saves me money and it is in date.
I was just reading another thread about someone buying their advent calendar a year ahead and I honestly thought it was normal (at least for lower income families.) But now I am not sure I should be gifting year old chocolate. No one has noticed but then again I haven't told.

Would you think it's disgusting? Or is it fine?

It's in date? Of course thats fine!!!

Acunningruse · 05/12/2019 11:19

I would (and do this) for my kids because I know the chances of chocolate making it to 3-4 months in this house are nigh on impossible Grin but I wouldn't for other families who might not open/eat them within the BB date.

BillHadersNewWife · 05/12/2019 11:19

I've never done it because I thought the chocolate would get that nasty white fur on it. Doesn't it?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/12/2019 11:19

My children's advent calendars bought this year go out of date in March. So I don't think buying them a year ahead would work.

If they are in date that is one thing and you can store them correctly. But not everything keeps that long.

Cloverbeauty · 05/12/2019 11:19

Not sure I'd even notice. Would be too busy eating the chocolate. Grin

RollOnNextYear · 05/12/2019 11:20

As long as stored OK. I don't see why not.
I personally don't because I would eat it. But I'd Imagine it be ok

AdalindMeisner · 05/12/2019 11:22

I did that this year, chocolate coins for stockings... I did forget where I had hid them though which meant they couldn't be eaten before Christmas (a real risk in this house!) found them last night when sorting boxes out!

frazzledasarock · 05/12/2019 11:22

Chocolate keeps fine in a cool dark storage area. If you put it in the fridge it gets the white bloom.

I wouldn’t do it myself. Purely because it would not make it past January in this house.

Pancakeflipper · 05/12/2019 11:23

How have you managed to not eat it?

I can't buy the chocolate treats a month before Christmas otherwise they disappear into my tummy.

Myusernamecame · 05/12/2019 11:31

Pancake

I put them all in a box behind the xmas decs and it is such a fuss to get to them that I don't bother!
It is like an xmas present to myself because when taking out the xmas tree and decs I see the chocolates from last year and I think 'Yay!' I genuinely forget every year!

I think it's absolutely fine.

So long as you can store them in a cool dark place. It would need to not get too warm even in the height of summer, which is quite a challenge. Even if it is out of date it still won't hurt, there is a great margin of tolerance in best before dates so long as things are correctly stored,

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/12/2019 11:38

I think it is a great idea! The only reason I wouldn't do it is that I know I would forget where I had put them, and wouldn't be able to find them the next Christmas. Who am I kidding - I would have forgotten where they were before the end of January. Xmas Blush

Yummymummy2020 · 05/12/2019 11:39

If it’s in date I see absolutely nothing wrong with that at all! I’m not sure why others would to be honest! I think it’s a sensible thing to do and I often do similar, though honestly it wouldn’t last the year in my house😂😂😂 but that’s not because I’d have an issue with eating it the following Christmas it’s because we are very greedy😂😂😂

StrawberrySquash · 05/12/2019 12:43

Perfectly fine, so long as stored properly. Does make me wonder how much of last year's chocolate is still being sold to us this year, which is mildly cheeky. A lot of it has quite short dates.
