This is from one of the UK tabolids

@BertrandRussell - it's a Christmas song about Christmas which may not be as amazing for the singer as for many others but it's a Christmas song. And a great one too.
I have some genuine pet peeves when it comes to Christmas songs: Slade and Merry XMas everybody or that squeaky Santa Baby turn me into a Grinch and the Christmas Shoes is just horrible.

DarlingNikita · 04/12/2019 13:09

People are twats. The singing and lyrics are exquisite.

Personally I think it should be studied as a piece of poetry on the A level curriculum!
I agree with this.

Emeraldshamrock · 04/12/2019 13:09

I think the song is good but don't get why it's considered a christmas song
It is about Christmas, plus an Irish man in New York, probably the experience of many who went chasing the dream.
It is my favourite Christmas song, it brings back childhood memories when we listened to it at Nanny's Christmas with the adults. Shock

misspiggy19 · 04/12/2019 13:09

Good, it is a shit song with shit lyrics

Lorddenning1 · 04/12/2019 13:09

Lyrics
It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true
They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me
You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night
The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day
You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day
I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas day.

in case your interested

XXcstatic · 04/12/2019 13:09

Sorry, but I don’t think “you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy fgot” is lyrical mastery, personally

The mastery is in vividly conveying two characters and their struggles, in a few verses. The words are spoken in character and convey the character's viewpoint. To convey a character convincingly, an author needs to use the words that the character would choose, which is not the same as endorsing their viewpoint - as is surely obvious to anyone with half a brain cell? You might as well ban Macbeth because Lady M revels in murders, or the Iliad for encouraging people to run off with other people's wives and start protracted wars in Asia Minor Hmm

FrivolousPancake · 04/12/2019 13:10

Personally I think it should be studied as a piece of poetry on the A level curriculum!

Agree

puds11 · 04/12/2019 13:10

I’d rather they stopped playing songs by sex offenders

CoolCarrie · 04/12/2019 13:10

The song makes me sad when I hear it because the wonderful Kirsty is on it, and she died in a tragic incident at Christmas time, but heroically saved her son’s life. It’s very melancholy song because of Kirsty’s death.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/12/2019 13:10

No it should not be banned

Getting quite pissed off at all this "Do that" "Don#t do that" "listen to this, not that"

NO . I will listen to what I like .

rhubarbcrumbles · 04/12/2019 13:12

If it's good enough for DD's teacher to play it in the classroom (which I do think is inappropriate at school) then it's good enough for the radio.

Seriously though, it's a great song and if parents don't want their children to hear it then they can choose to have the radio on in the car at xmas. There is far worse in lyrics of songs than that, all the DJ has done is draw attention to it,

SaltedCaramelWithEverything · 04/12/2019 13:12

I have to say, it is probably my favourite Christmas song.

That said, I am happy that they normally cut the word "f". It's a horrible word and so I definitely prefer it without, but overall, nah, it's actually quite beautiful.

PlasticPatty · 04/12/2019 13:12

I love it.
I love the lyrics.
I find it beautiful and true.
I'm going to listen to it right now.

HeyMissyYouSoFine · 04/12/2019 13:13

First five words of the song.........It was Christmas Eve babe

Clearly chocked full of Christmas spirit.

I think it was because it's played so much around chritsmas that it ended up being in my children's christmas choir concert.

I'm not in favour of banning it though.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/12/2019 13:14

Listening to it now - an important part of my life

The year it came out was the year this song helped me realise that the drunken, alkie abuse in my family wasn't right and wasn't the norm.

And that there was a better life waiting for me when I got out.

(And there was)

DarlingNikita · 04/12/2019 13:14

XXcstatic, completely agree with your analysis.

SaltedCaramelWithEverything · 04/12/2019 13:15

And just to add, if we're going to ban any song, it should be Blurred Lines Hmm Absolutely disgusting song.

JoGose · 04/12/2019 13:15

I love this song, it shouldn’t be banned

Maxusmaximus · 04/12/2019 13:15

Glad I don’t listen to the radio then.

Fraggling · 04/12/2019 13:16

Great song.

nononever · 04/12/2019 13:16

Personally I love it and don't give a damn if some BBC DJ I've never heard of wants it banned. I don't listen to BBC radio.

Yorkshirelass444 · 04/12/2019 13:17

Love it.

Lifecraft · 04/12/2019 13:17

Good, it is a shit song with shit lyrics

Spot on. I don't know what the late, great Kirstie Maccoll was thinking of when she agreed to get involved in this fucking dirge.

justasking111 · 04/12/2019 13:20

The lyrics are depressing so not sure it should be a christmas song. Mind you it is in very good company as a BAD xmas song.

Melroses · 04/12/2019 13:20

It's not my Christmas, but it is somebody's Christmas. It paints a very vivid picture. It is real and raw.

I love it (and loved Kirsty).
