To think this baggage allowance isn't enough?

DS is travelling with his sports team to a 3-day tournament in Europe. In order to save money the organiser has only booked one 10kg check-in bag between two team members.

The 10kg bags have very limited dimensions (see pic). His shoes alone fill up almost half the bag (he's size 12, and can't travel in his playing shoes), and as a minimum he will need to add playing/training kits, under-wear, sleepwear, wash stuff, towel, etc, so I'm struggling to see how he will share it with another player. In addition he can take one very small carry-on bag, but that will quickly be filled with water bottle, snacks, phone etc. AIBU to think this won't be enough?

I've offered to pay for priority boarding, which would increase the on-board allowance, but apparently it's booked up, so the only option will be to pay a much larger sum for an additional check-in bag. Sad

It won’t be nearly enough. You’ll need to pay for a checked bag. Can two people share a checked bag so the cost isn’t so high?

Yanbu
your best bet is...
Socks and underpants inside shoes.
He'll need to roll his clothes and I'd layer clothing on day of travel.
Forget the snacks and what not and use the rucksack for clothing.

While I think this is a bit tight of the people organising the trip, presumably there are parents who need the cost of it to be kept as low as possible, so I can see why it was done.

However, thinking of the stuff he needs, he won't need wash stuff or a towel as - surely/presumably? - they're staying in a hotel somewhere that will provide that?

He wears his ordinary shoes and puts his playing shoes in his carry-on bag.

If it's Europe, he really doesn't need to pack snacks in his bag, as the flight isn't going to be long enough. Either stuff will be provided or on sale on board the aircraft if he's hungry, and surely can go without carrying a water bottle for a few days? Phone and passport will not take up that much room.

Underwear and socks won't take up much room, and he can sleep in his underpants and a t-shirt for three days, rather than having to take pyjamas.

Can't really see the problem. But if you really can't fit it in, then yes - you pay for extra checked luggage.

If you have the booking details you should be able to add a 10kg checked bag for fairly cheap (about a tenner?) it's fairly new but I did it last time we flew with ryanair

Seeingadistance · 04/12/2019 09:54

Is the organiser one of these men who never does their own packing?

On a practical level, how are the team members going to share the packing if they don’t live in same house? And I don’t understand why it would save money to share what looks like a fairly standard cabin bag.

Sorry, no help to offer, but I”d be really pissed off.

AlwaysCheddar · 04/12/2019 09:54

That will be fun at check in when they ask if they have packed their own bags. IMO the organiser is a tosser and I bet they aren't sharing a case. I would be complaining.

He doesn’t need to take much for 3 days. He won’t need a water bottle and snacks for a short flight, just eat and drink in the airport before he gets on the plane. Sleep in pants and don’t take a towel! (Or if they are staying somewhere that doesn’t provide them, get one of the tiny expanding ones from Millets and don’t bring it back.)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/12/2019 09:57

I'm guessing it's not just space but weight of the shoes and kit? Has the coach even tried this?
10kg is individual hand luggage for a lot of people.

Any friends he can split the cost of a large check in bag with? Even if it's they all put their shoes in it...

TooleyVanDooley · 04/12/2019 09:57

No-one needs 10 kg of luggage for 3 days in Europe!

Velveteenfruitbowl · 04/12/2019 10:00

Does he actually need a towel? If he really needs it then get a micro fibre one from a camping store. They take up almost no room. Decant all of his shower gel etc into little bottles. He can sleep in pants and t shirts to save room on pyjamas. It should fit then. Shoes with socks, pants, shower gels stuffed inside and in gaps. A couple of t-shits and a micro fibre towel on top. Minimal amount of kit on top/in carry on. Unless his kit of extensive it should be fine surely.

christmassymcchristmas · 04/12/2019 10:03

They don't ask if you've packed your own bags because you check in online and don't go to the check in desk.

It's tight but it's enough.

Playing shoes with socks and underwear inside them, kit rolled around shoes, t-shirts and shorts on top of that.

Backpack - chargers, change of clothes x 2, toothbrush.

At airport - Boots for snacks/meal deal and any essential toiletries (the hotel will have most things he needs). Carry this on in a carrier bag.

Wear - hoodie plus another round waist/carry. Shorts for sleeping in underneath trackies, 2 pairs of socks Grin

christmassymcchristmas · 04/12/2019 10:04

Micro fibre towel will clip to the backpack anyway
