Just considering options and seriously considering going back to carpets

Depends on brand and cost. Amtico should last for donkey's years but a much cheaper brand is going to wear out much quicker.

Ffsnosexallowed · 04/12/2019 09:58

The amtico in our house had been in for over 20 years and still going strong.

kjhkj · 04/12/2019 09:59

Amtico isn't laminate floor though...

kjhkj · 04/12/2019 10:00

We have expensive laminate in one of the rooms in our house. It isn't something I would buy again. We deliberately went for hard wearing brand which is used in shops but it dents and scratches very easily.

HairyFloppins · 04/12/2019 10:00

Our quickstep has been down 15 years now and still looks as new.

jellycatspyjamas · 04/12/2019 10:02

We’ve got Pergo laminate in our lounge and dining room, it wasn’t cheap but still looks like new 15 years later. We got cheaper stuff from B&Q in the playroom which doesn’t look as good after 6 years. I think it’s one of those things where you do get what you’ve paid for.

babycatcher411 · 04/12/2019 10:03

We paid a good price for our ‘decent’ laminate flooring, from carpet right there’s the problem and at just under 3 years old it’s starting to show signs of wear and tear. A lot of the joins in the high traffic areas look dirty, but they’re not, the pattern has worn off leaving brown marks.

RadElla · 04/12/2019 10:05

We have cheap IKEA laminate downstairs, that was supposed to be a temporary fix. It's been exactly 10 years since it was put in, and it's still undamaged.

kjhkj · 04/12/2019 10:14

Ours is top of the range quickstep and is pretty scratched where chairs have been pulled back etc. We will eventually replace with real wood but unfortunately, because we thought it would be long lasting, the kitchen units are on top of it.

Silencedwitness · 04/12/2019 10:15

Depending on budget have you looked at Kardean? We’ve had ours in our hall for 10 years and it still looks new.

Amber2019 · 04/12/2019 10:35

For the cheaper stuff we got about 10 years, it was still fine just looking a little tired.

Inliverpool1 · 04/12/2019 10:35

I’m considering Kardean or Amitico next time too as it’s not much more expensive than carpet.

This has been down 10 years and looks dreadful now, only so many rugs to hide dents and actual chunks missing you can put down.
Thank you for all the comments ☺️

at least 10 years.
if you treat it well 20.

DowntonCrabby · 04/12/2019 10:37

Our quickstep has been down for 13 years and going strong.

OldGrinch · 04/12/2019 10:44

Quickstep here, have top of their range grooved planks and after 15 years it still looks as good as new, throughout downstairs so subject to a lot of heavy traffic over years.

ShiningTor · 04/12/2019 10:47

Our Quickstep is fifteen years old and still going strong.

Shosha1 · 04/12/2019 10:55

Most expensive from carpet right. 4 years in and it is awful . Never again

BarbaraofSeville · 04/12/2019 11:07

We've had bog standard stuff from Ikea that lasted 10 years and was still in good condition when we moved house and now some 5 YO stuff from B&Q in the kitchen that's still perfect.

It doesn't get cleaned as often as the average Mumsnetter thinks is necessary though.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 11:10

My bog standard cheapo one has lasted 20+ years. I the. Got bored of it 20 years on and replaced with tiling

BananaPeach · 04/12/2019 11:21

Our carpet fitter really, really would not let us choose laminate saying it wouldn’t last and would look awful, as well as being very expensive to lay. Apparently the newest craze is LVT- luxury vinyl tile. Ours hasn’t been laid yet but I’m happy with the research showing it will do well. Large 4 bedroom house with 2 reception rooms and 2 hallways, plus vinyl for 4 bathrooms and stairs carpeted is coming in at £3,500 with labour and removing the old carpets which I think is great

gwenneh · 04/12/2019 11:24

My parents put pergo in the kitchen 20 years ago and it’s still pristine. The same cannot be said for the cheaper version in the bedrooms, or the actual hardwood in the rest of the house.

jellycatspyjamas · 04/12/2019 11:38

I wonder if some of it is about how it’s fitted? The person who fitted our pergo was brilliant- the joins are really tight and water doesn’t seem to get in so it hasn’t lifted or split.

Inliverpool1 · 04/12/2019 11:38

@BananaPeach, that’s a great price. I have Rhino Lino 😂 in the kitchen, same as the laminate and tbh it’s still looking good.
