To think the keto diet

Is maybe not healthy...

Ive researched into this diet (or lifestyle as others put it) alot as i have around 17lbs to lose, i did toy with the idea of trying it and gave it a go a couple months ago but i cant live completely without bread and potatoes Blush i also found it expensive buying/cooking different meals to the rest of my family (fussy eaters)
But after seeing a post on a weight loss group of a lady who is going through tests on her heart, many people adamant that the keto diet is nothing to do with it and to carry on... surely that much high fat can eventually have a detrimental affect on your health?
Im no dietician or expert, so does anyone with more knowledge have any insight into how the benefits outweigh the negatives.
I also understand it can reverse diabetes, which is fantastic.
It seems like one of the most popular weight loss plans, but i would worry about the affects of so much bacon and high fat meat.

You're looking at fat wrong. Fat isn't simple, and not all fat is equal. (The program "the truth about fats" that was one a while back is very informative)
When in ketosis, your body uses fat (rather than sugar/carbs) for fuel.
When you eat healthy/good fat, it drives down the bad fat in the body.
I've done keto, and I found it massively improved my visceral fat
The keto diet (like any diet) isn't for everyone, but it does provide results, and those with diabetes and high cholesterol seem to find they're actually better on Keto

frumpety · 04/12/2019 11:04

I appreciate that VickRyan its just 60 % of daily intake from fat seemed really high to me ? What form of fat are you eating ?

StoneColdSaidSo · 04/12/2019 11:12

I did it to lose weight and help with my thyroid. It did both. My dsis did it to help her lose weight and help control her type 1 diabetes. It worked for her too.

It’s not something you should be on long-term, especially strict keto, but it’s definitely good short term. A out of people I know do strict keto for a year or so and then switch to lazy keto to maintain.

SummerPavillion · 04/12/2019 11:20

I don't know if it's keto exactly, but I've been sticking to 30-40g carbs/day (all from veg) for a while and everything is better!

Have lost weight, stomach very calm (sensitive usually, stomach ache every day), skin better, can think more clearly, masses more energy, appetite reduced so feeling hungry is never a distraction.

It was described somewhere as being like the duracell bunny version of yourself, and I totally agree

hamstersarse · 04/12/2019 11:23

I have been eating LCHF for a couple of years and I am not sure where you are doing your reading!

THere is no link from saturated fat to heart disease, quite the contrary bjsm.bmj.com/content/51/15/1111

Keto is about reducing inflammation in your body, which is why people report such vast health benefits - from gum health to mental health.

THe cholesterol argument is also interesting. THere is lots of evidence that we have got cholesterol completely wrong, alongside saturated fat. Cholesterol may raise at first on the keto diet...because it is healing it after being inflamed for so long. Cholesterol is a friend not an enemy - it transports fats and proteins around the body!

hamstersarse · 04/12/2019 11:28

in my entirely uninformed opinion i feel there is a link between keto and my reproductive health.

There is some evidence for this. Once you reduce your insulin levels your sex hormones are able to balance out which is why people with PCOS get great results from keto for example, and people who have meno symptoms and PMS. And then conceiving seems to be a thing - there is a whole Reddit page to r:ketobabies

SummerPavillion · 04/12/2019 11:28

Yes hamstersarse I agree with all of that. I first started LCHF for an autoimmune inflammatory condition (bowel disease) and it worked unbelievably well. Not only did I recover but lots of other aspect of my health improved too.

I'd strongly recommend it to anyone with an inflammatory condition.

hamstersarse · 04/12/2019 11:38

I just couldnt afford to keep to it any longer though. It cost me a fortune

I have found that to be the opposite because I don't do any of the crappy keto substitutes like baking where the ingredients DO costs a bomb. Also, you eat the meat which isn't the trendy lean, no fat, tasteless stuff! And therefore it is much cheaper. Pork, liver, chicken legs are cheap as chips and very very nutritious, and you are just eating these with veg and some fat (butter, cream, olive oil) etc.

Because you don't need / want to snack, you then also don't waste money on crap.

Percypig1 · 04/12/2019 11:53

Hi my name is elaine I have been trying to find out more about this diet I so need to do it could you possible tell me how you are doing it as I think I am doing something wrong as I list about 7lbs only thanks really appreciated if you can help x

hamstersarse · 04/12/2019 11:57

How long have you been doing it? What is your starting weight? How old are you?

Carmenfortuna · 04/12/2019 17:19

Im going to look more into this (the reproductive side of things) , thanks for your replies.
Back to the keto diet for me , except will have to swap the steaks and greek cheese for the cheaper options Grin

Carmenfortuna · 04/12/2019 17:20

That was to hamstersarse btw

goose1964 · 04/12/2019 17:29

Don't just start this if you've had your gallbladder removed. It is common to have problems digesting fats and this amount of fat could have you in agony

Bakingqueen23 · 04/12/2019 19:54

I did it for a couple of months for epilepsy, it didn't work and I hated it. It had an adverse effect on my mental health which my neurologist was concerned about (when you lose so much control with seizures it's easy to want to control something e.g food). It's also expensive and had affiliated problems like kidney stones. I did lose weight rapidly, which wasn't my intention. I also had no energy. Unless there was a medical reason and it was medic-approved, I'd stick to tried and tested balanced diet and exercise. By all means cut carbs, but not to keto levels x

frumpety · 04/12/2019 20:00

Bakingqueen23 were you given a keto diet to follow by your consultant ? I wonder if there is a big difference between a medically prescribed keto diet and a trawled through the internet one ?

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2019 20:03

How well have you read up? Your op indicates you haven't.

It's high fat. Medium protein. low carb as a percentage of your daily intake. Instead of high carb, medium protein, low carb. It flips it on its head. It's not loads of fat.

Far satiates you, makes you feel full for longer. Reduces your appetite. It's not you're chomping down on lard or anything

Hmm
Bluntness100 · 04/12/2019 20:07

I'm interested to see long term results in scientifically conducted studies...

Then google it. Confused

britinnyc · 04/12/2019 20:16

It works great for me in the short term if I am looking to shed a few pounds that creep on. In general I find I feel so much better if I avoid bread, pasta and sugar so I try to stick to that when not wanting to lose weight and just get carbs from things like beans, squashes and sweet potatoes. I find that manageable in the long term and don't have cravings or miss the foods I am avoiding.

frumpety · 04/12/2019 20:19

Bluntness100 is it by calories or whatever measurement of each , so fats, carbs and protein ? How do you work out how much you need of each ?

BarbedBloom · 04/12/2019 20:31

I have PCOS and rheumatoid arthritis. It has improved both conditions considerably. My cholesterol etc is absolutely fine.

MrsBobBlackadder · 04/12/2019 20:50

This is really interesting - I've been on keto for three months (lost almost 2 stone and feel brilliant!) - only last week I was thinking that my EXTREMELY heavy periods had become a bit lighter since going into ketosis.

SweetSally · 04/12/2019 20:52

@Tattooedmama

It actually really works and is not that difficult to follow at all. And bonus is you are never ever hungry!

Tattooedmama · 04/12/2019 21:11

Mixed opinions on it, must admit i did struggle to stick to it but i am a cereal snacker.

Bluntness100 - Wow i never thought of that Hmm
Obviously i have, but same as anything there is no definitive answers so I was asking on others opinions who have done it both short and long term

Tattooedmama · 04/12/2019 21:11
