To think that buying half sizes shoes for toddlers is silly

Am I the only person who thinks that buying half size shoes for toddlers is just silly? Especially for winter shoes when naturally they wear thicker socks?

*must make

I think part of it is that sometimes one foot is bigger than the other so my DDs are currently 6 and 6.5 so if she was then in a 7 it would be a good size too big for one foot

PorpentinaScamander · 03/12/2019 20:40

Huh? Why is a 4.5 any 'sillier' than a 4? Confused

As an adult I buy a half size on the rare occasion I can find them because I am a 4.5 so they fist better than a 4 or a 5!

Comefromaway · 03/12/2019 20:40

For years my teenage dd was a size 2.5 shoes. So that’s the size she wore even though it restricted what styles she could buy.

Elbeagle · 03/12/2019 20:41

Yes SnugglySnerd, I’m a 4.5!

OP, half sizes cost the same as full sizes don’t they? So I genuinely don’t get why it’s ridiculous? If they need a 5 I buy a 5, if they need a 5.5 I buy a 5.5. The cost is the same either way!

Pipstelle · 03/12/2019 20:42

They literally aren't the same measurement and it does matter to have proper fitted shoes for growing feet.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 03/12/2019 20:43

Who wears thicker socks in winter?? Do they even sell thicker socks?

Buy the right size shoe. You would for your own feet.

Camomila · 03/12/2019 20:45

I get DS half sizes sometimes, his feet grow really slowly. I think how big the difference between sizes is also depends on the brand. Its a bit cold for trainers now so I put DS in boots that were half a size bigger and he kept tripping over because they were too big for him.

Camomila · 03/12/2019 20:47

I'm a 4.5 too (top tip - buy your winter boots from the M&S girls range as they have half sizes and are cheaper than ladies boots!)

Sashkin · 03/12/2019 20:48

Presumably you are buying shoes at least twice a year anyway (winter boots, summer sandals, etc). I don’t replace DS’s shoes because he’s grown out of them, I replace them because he can’t keep wearing snow boots in May, or sandals in October.

So you buy the right size at the time, and if that is a full size then fine, if it’s a half size there’s no point in going up another size just to avoid a half-size. Why would you? They won’t have grown into it by the time you need to buy a new pair, let alone grown out of it.

Cutesbabasmummy · 03/12/2019 20:49

I buy the size he is measured at and fit. He doesn't wear thicker socks in winter. He is at school so wears school socks. He's age 4 and a size 11.5. I'm 44 and a size 3.5. Not a 3 and not a 4. A 3.5.

Elbeagle · 03/12/2019 20:50

DD1 is a 10.5 and DD2 is a 10. DD1’s shoes don’t fit DD2, and vice versa.

Ginger1982 · 03/12/2019 20:53

Why would you not buy the right size shoes? I wouldn't wear shoes too big or small for myself so why would I make my child?

DaphneFanshaw · 03/12/2019 20:57

What 'Tom foolery' ?

I genuinely can't understand what the issue is. It's not as if they are trying to con people into buy extra shoes, they are simply offering more sizes which gives a more accurate fit.

DaphneFanshaw · 03/12/2019 21:05

Of course it’s a con, there’s no such thing as a free lunch / shoe. The half sizes all add up eventually.
You know what’ll happen then don’t you.

Elbeagle · 03/12/2019 21:06

DaphneFanshaw have you been drinking? Xmas Grin

DaphneFanshaw · 03/12/2019 21:07

No, I’m just bored Grin

Elbeagle · 03/12/2019 21:08

Ok so in this scenario... DD was wearing a size 9. When she said her shoes were too small, I took her to be measured. She was a 10.5 (with growing room). Should I have bought a size 11, which was far too big, to avoid a half size? Or should I have bought a size 10 (fit fine but no growing room) to avoid a half size?

changeforprivacy · 03/12/2019 21:08

I really don't have a fucking clue understand what you mean. You don't buy extra shoes Confused

Nope, you got me?

RoseHippy1 · 03/12/2019 21:09

I don’t take mine to get measured . I measure them at home (you can buy the measuring gauge) and buy very lightly worn, used shoes at nearly new sales. Saves me a fortune.

And if they measure eg 4.5 I buy size 5...

crispysausagerolls · 03/12/2019 21:11

People who don’t get their children’s feet properly measured and adhere to the sizes is a huge pet peeve of mine. It’s extremely important for children to have correctly fitting footwear. A half size makes a huge difference on a tiny foot.

Biancadelrioisback · 03/12/2019 21:14

Erm, I'm an adult size 3.5 and it does indeed make a difference

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/12/2019 21:15

Maybe it's just my 18mo DD who trips over if she isnt wearing her correct size (4.5). I did think once "oh surely half a size wont make a difference" and purchased her size 5, they did make a difference, so they've been stored away. Plus she has been the same size for a while now so I dont see it as a waste of money - not sure buying correct size shoes for growing feet is considered a waste tbh. YABU.

Elisheva · 03/12/2019 21:15

I agree with you. The difference between half sizes is only 4mm. If they are bigger than, say, a 12 then I buy a 13.
