Hello, just realised that I can now change my settings so I can have all 1,000 posts of a thread on one page.

Has this change been rolled out to everyone or have I entered some hallowed tier of MN? Grin

I’m sulking. I had 1000 with my old account but that was a million years ago and I can’t remember my user name, never mind the sodding password.

SurpriseSparDay · 04/12/2019 08:42

What are you using dragonsandfairies?

I’m using the mobile site on my phone. I’d be surprised if you really can’t highlight OP posts.

Perisoire · 04/12/2019 08:45

@Aridane

I can’t remember exactly but I think it was 2015. I guess it must have been before 25/01/2015 Confused

@IWantADifferentName do you remember what email address you would have used? You could try the ‘forget my password’ method where MN send you an email to reset your password?

OP posts:
MistyCloud · 04/12/2019 08:48

I wouldn't want that to be honest. I don't even like 100 posts to a page.

25 posts per page for me. @IWantADifferentName Smile

IWantADifferentName · 04/12/2019 08:55

No, I created an email account for junk mail that was random numbers and letters (no, I don’t know why I thought that was a good idea at the time). Computer updated and deleted the details of saved accounts and because it was a ‘throwaway’ I couldn’t remember what the address is.

Still sulking Angry. Might go and eat worms in the garden now Sad

IWantADifferentName · 04/12/2019 08:55

At least I have 100 posts per page. 25 is just too much clinking fir me on some threads!

RonniePickering · 04/12/2019 08:57

I have the option to have 1000 pages but I prefer 100.

CardsforKittens · 04/12/2019 09:00

Cool! I’ve just set mine to Middlemarch Mode. Smile

But there wasn’t an option to highlight the OP’s posts. Is that also dependent on when I registered?

Beveren · 04/12/2019 09:03

Does anyone know why they changed it to a maximum of 100 a page? I have 1000 because I hated the faff of having to keep waiting for a new page to reload - even worse when you want to refer back to an older post.

RonniePickering · 04/12/2019 09:05

I had no idea this had changed but I do recall in the last few months some sort of riot grumbling when they got rid of 1000 posts to a page and the max you could have was 500 - this was changed overnight across the board. Iirc it was done because servers were overloaded by 1000 post threads . But there was so much upset that I think they had to reinstate it. So perhaps this is their solution to the overloading thing - newer joiners don't get the 1000 posts. Hmm.

That was posted on the thread linked above.

I think there is a chance that you will get 1,000 after a few years. How long have you been on this account? I might be taking out of my arse but I promise I didn’t have the ability to go from 100 to 1,000 a few years ago, I tried Grin

@CardsforKittens everyone can highlight OP’s posts, but think you have to be on a PC to do this, not mobile

@Beveren I believe MN moved to 100 per page due to server issues. Lots of posters loading up threads with hundreds of posts was putting a strain on the server.

Ive been here over 10 years and always had mine set for 1000 pages, although i dont use the app, ,just the pc or mobile site.
I think they did try to meddle with it once back in 2013 and it didnt go down well, so went back to 1000 pages again.

footchewer · 04/12/2019 09:34

I guess the 1,000 posts thing was putting too much load on the web-back-end. If it has to look up 1000 posts in the database every time anyone opens a thread then the database basically has to do up to 40 times as much work than with the default 25 posts. just buy a new database server please (only joking) And I'm guessing most of those people never get anywhere near the bottom of their 1,000-post page most of the time, so from the DB's PoV it's pointless work and data transfer (though it's only plaintext - diddly-squat compared to pics or music or videos).

It's a shame because I often read MN on the train/tube where reception is patchy at best, and pre-loading 1000 posts would mean I'd have something to keep me going through all the tunnels/underground. Oh well, 100 is better than 25.

Perisoire · 04/12/2019 09:37

@footchewer that’s the real kicker, lots of people have the ability to load 1,000 posts but will stick to 25. It’s wasted on them Grin

OP posts:
CardsforKittens · 04/12/2019 09:41

Thanks Perisoire I’ll try changing it on the PC.

EssentialHummus · 04/12/2019 09:49

I thought you were going to say you had started reading Middlemarch or something

Grin Or A Little Life?

badguyduh · 04/12/2019 12:43

Oh I did actually mis-read slaps own wrist - I only have 100 per page. Still better than whatever most ppl have.

HowToStopThis9 · 04/12/2019 12:58

@DesMartinsPetCat

The 1000 post setting used to be there for a long time but then they turned that option off for new registrations.

If you got caught out in the data leak a few years ago, and wanted to cancel your old account, MNHQ promised that if you opened a new account, they would sort it out so you could still view 1000 posts. So we cancelled our accounts and opened new ones and guess what - MNHQ reneged on their promises. Hmm

Then a while back the 1000 post option was switched on for everyone again. Took a few years though!!

Perisoire · 04/12/2019 13:03

I think this is what’s happened! Because I can’t explain why I can now have 1,000 posts when I couldn’t before.

cardsforkittens You need to be on the desktop site to highlight the OPs posts but you don't need to be on a PC to do it, you can switch to desktop view by scrolling right down to the bottom of the page and tapping desktop, you can the switch back to the mobile site view by scrolling right down again and tapping mobile.

CardsforKittens · 08/12/2019 12:35

Thank you ActualFemale! I have managed to do it. This will save me much ‘Find in page’ searching when trying to catch up with the longer and more contentious threads Grin
