Balloons bad?

hipslikecinderella · 03/12/2019 18:20

100s of balloons for our xmas fair and they were all popped at the end. Aibu balloons are wasteful and bad?
(Am a bit bitter as the fair organiser wouldn't let me have glitter as it's bad for the environment)

Not recyclable
Landfill
So yes, not good

Sprinklemetinsel · 03/12/2019 18:26

Bad, but if popped and binned it's not as bad as if released somewhere. Glitter gets everywhere, it gets ingested, drunk etc. Balloons popped and binned will at least stay put.

So 50/50 I'd say.

I remember reading that they never degrade. So, yeah they are are bad. (Don’t get me started on blooming glow sticks that our school disco always has.)

It annoys me when people go to the beach or wherever (but especially the beach) and release loads of balloons over the sea. Just what do they think is going to happen to them? Their deceased loved ones will not receive them or see the spectacle.

They do. It takes four years. The same as an oak leaf... apparently.

Sprinklemetinsel · 03/12/2019 21:19

No they don't. The research was done by a someone with a vested interest.

Try this instead: balloonsblow.org/latex-balloons-still-kill/

That link is where I got my info from!

I quote...

"Another claim is that so-called “biodegradable” latex balloons take the same amount of time to decompose as an oak leaf does. This is very misleading; oak leaves are very durable and can take four years to decompose!"

So they do biodegrade. It just takes four years... just as I said in my previous post.

That was an 'even if you believe it, 4 years is too long' kinda quote. The rest of the article says 7yrs and counting.
