Hi, I posted in children's health this morning but haven't had any replies so I hope it's ok to repost here.

I took my son to the Drs for blood tests and stool sample as I thought he may have food allergies/intolerances. He is always bloated, uncomfortable and unable to eat normal sized meals without discomfort.

We went back for the results last week and the Dr said all food related tests came back fine but one blood test indicated an inflamed liver. He now has an appointment for a scan in 2 weeks time.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar and whether an inflamed liver can ever be something not too serious, or if it is something I need to prepare myself for before we get the results?

Livers can be inflamed just because the body is fighting an infection.

Confusedbeetle · 03/12/2019 18:06

You need to ask this question of the doctor

DontPetTheSweatyStuff · 03/12/2019 18:10

@Confusedbeetle I just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar blood test result and it has turned out to be something easily dealt with. Not looking for medical advice.

@DontPetTheSweatyStuff liver function tests are really unreliable as a one-off (although great your GP is pursuing it!). I spent six months going through tests, scans etc. before it was realised there was nowt wrong with me a different anticoagulant for my test bloods wouldn’t show. If your little one needs to go on to further assessment please feel free to PM me, I have been round the houses in SE England!

DontPetTheSweatyStuff · 03/12/2019 20:57

Thanks @Slothkin. I have my fingers crossed for it just being his body fighting of a viral infection.

Glandular fever can cause inflamed liver for a few months after you’ve had it and as previous posters said it may not be anything nefarious at all. Try not to worry as it may not be linked to his other symptoms. Have you tried keeping a food diary? I find that certain foods in combination will always make me bloated and uncomfortable to the point of not being able to eat anymore although none of them cause a problem on their own.

Troels · 03/12/2019 22:14

My liver was out of whack for years with no reason that the docrrs could find.
They ended up doing the blood test for Coeliacs which was very positive and then the endoscopy and biopsy, also positive.
So there are many things that could cause it. I'm sure the doctor is working his way through all the things that can cause all his bloating and inability to eat well and at the same time cause liver problems.

InsufficientFuns · 03/12/2019 22:22

I had a very inflamed liver after glandular fever and wasnt allowed to eat protein for about 1 month, no alcohol allowed for 3 years. My liver was hot hard and I felt sick.

My liver recovered completely and is generally in perfect condition whenever I've had blood tests done.

Cuddling57 · 03/12/2019 22:25

Aw hope he is ok.
Once I had to rush to get my DS from school to an emergency blood test as previous one came back with worrying results. Second test was fine!
I think bloating is sometimes related to hyper mobility in children too.

Slothkin · 03/12/2019 23:06

Fingers crossed! It’s almost certainly a weird outlier result, but it’s great the docs are double-checking! If it makes you feel any better I was on observation as a teenager after a weird liver test result and once had to go to the docs because I felt a bit sick and weird and then my tum inflated like a balloon - turns out I had trapped wind! My poor Mum was so scared (and me too!).

Slothkin · 03/12/2019 23:14

(and I’m now in my 30s and my last liver scan was ‘you’ve the liver of a teenager’, so honestly even if there are concerns it might well be totally fine long-term!)

DontPetTheSweatyStuff · 04/12/2019 07:16

Thanks, it's definitely helped me relax a bit I'm sure it will all be fine Smile

I had an inflamed liver when I had glandular fever.
My blood tests couldn’t pick up the Epstein Barr virus that causes it , but they picked up the liver inflammation.
