Nighttime vomiting - toddler

Hi - my daughter is almost 2.5. For the past month she has had a bad cough at night. And on about 10 occasions she has vomited. At first the excessive coughing seemed to lead to the vomiting, but last night she vomited twice without too much coughing. No other symptoms. GP has checked her over and found nothing wrong. She’s had a chest x ray which was clear. I assumed it was just a viral chest infection but it has lingered a while now. (she’s been coughing about 6 weeks although vomiting only started a month ago). Has anyone else gone through this and concluded it was something else? She used to have bad reflux as a baby but grew out of it around 8 months. Can reflux suddenly come back in toddlers?! Thanks for any ideas anyone may have!

I should add, she sometimes coughs during the day, but not nearly as much as at night

Asthma? Allergies? Pets or dust?

If theres food in their bellies and they're doing a lot of coughing its exertion and it will unfortunately come up. Plus when they have a cold and going to bed and lying flat, the snot or nasal drip ends up running up their nose so its blocked up hence the coughing!

Asthma

CupCupGoose · 03/12/2019 10:08

My DS had this. He was diagnosed with asthma but turned out to be sleep apnoea. He eventually had his tonsils and adenoids removed. I always knew something wasn't right and it took years for them to finally refer him to ENT. I'm not saying this is what your dc has, but if it continues, go back tk your gp.

I thought reflux, but asthma is possible.

One thing - if it might be reflux, you can help things a lot by raising up the top (pillow end) of the bed, so they're never lying flat. Place a stack of books under the top feet of the bed. My doctor recommended that for DS when he had reflux.

Thanks. Anyone with experience of asthma - were there other symptoms such as wheezing with physical activity? GP said there would be but we haven’t seen any other symptoms.

Asthmatics can also get wheezy from a cold wind, cold water swimming, animals, pine Christmas trees, pets, inappropriate bedding like feathers... The list goes on and everyone has different triggers. A warm (stuffy) house in winter often exacerbates this.

My son was like this. He had reflux as a baby and when he got older (and still now at 4 though not as much) he was often sick a lot at night with a cold/cough.

Awkward1 · 03/12/2019 11:32

You can get cough variant asthma.
Is she teething molars?
I found olbas oil on a tissue helped mine with coughs.
Could it be croup?
Also they tend to cough more when too hot

MushroomTree · 03/12/2019 12:13

@Magicmonster my daughter is the same age as yours and has the same thing. It also happened last year.

They think asthma but won't diagnose until she's older.

Areyoufree · 03/12/2019 12:18

My daughter used to cough all night. She was eventually diagnosed with a dust mite allergy. Since keeping the room well vacuumed and well aired, her symptoms have reduced massively.

Anyone with experience of asthma - were there other symptoms such as wheezing with physical activity? GP said there would be but we haven’t seen any other symptoms.

My son has asthma - we had no idea until he got a virus and ended up in hospital. He was always very tired though - didn't run about much, and was developmentally behind, physically. Ironically, he didn't cough much. We suspected my daughter had asthma, but not him!

bloodywhitecat · 03/12/2019 12:19

Cough variant asthma. Not every asthmatic wheezes and it does annoy me that so many GPs do not recognise that fact.

Jelly0naplate · 03/12/2019 12:26

my 3 year old has recently had the vomiting bug about a week later he started being sick in the night - he had a cold but not much coughing (not enough to be sick).
After 3 nights i took him to the Drs as i'd read it could be an ear infection that made him ill when he was lying down. dr thought it was the throat and reflux actions become oversensitive after vomiting for a period of time and the mucus was settling on the back of his throat from his cold. so he'd lie down, it would collect, and the over sensitive bit would make him throw up. Then it just suddenly stopped!
hope that helps

champagneplanet · 03/12/2019 14:05

My 2 year old DD recently had this. She was full of cold and cough, no appetite, etc. Doctor said it was viral. She vomited from coughing once every night for about 10 days, sometimes in the daytime too.

GP said it's simply because she doesn't know when to stop coughing and the muscle isn't developed enough as yet to stop itself. She also had reflux when she was a baby. She's better now and it has stopped.

PonderLand · 03/12/2019 15:39

Do you have any animals? Cats dogs rabbits, any animal with fur makes my throat get scratchy and causes excessive coughing. I get other symptoms too but my throat starting to scratch and swell is the first sign

Awkward1 · 03/12/2019 16:24

Jelly0naplate
My 4yo just had V (just a few hrs), then completely fine for 10 days then V (again a few hours). Not sure if it's an odd bug or like you say irritated. She didnt really get a cough or cold either time.

Dc1 did used to get a cough and fever and V with an ear infection.

CottonSock · 03/12/2019 16:29

My dd had reflux then awful coughing. Thankfully she did grow out of it considerably about age 4. I think they call it pre-school wheeze until age 5 as it often resolves.

myself2020 · 03/12/2019 16:54

I have this. i sleep propped up when i have a cough (several pillows), otherwise i throw up

hanner414 · 03/12/2019 17:04

For my daughter the vomiting at night was a mixture of asthma and sleep apnea. We had to push to get either diagnosed, got sleep apnea diagnosed at 3 3/4 and tonsils and adnoids out 3 weeks later. Then asthma diagnosis after that

The removal of tonsils and adnoids meant when she did cough she wasnt sick as she had more space to breathe.

And then the inhalers after that have reduced the coughing.
