PE child endangerment

My son had a fall at lunch time which left him with a bloody leg since layers of his skin scraped off. But right after that, lunch time had finished so he went to his a PE lesson because he thought he should go for medical attention there since they had authorised staff to do it so he asked for a plaster for his leg but all they did was clean it up with a while and said "There is no point of a plaster since it will fall of during PE" But in that lesson he had rugby on the field (which was very muddy) and this could get his leg infected, not only that he could barely run. So after that he did PE even though he had an injured leg which could get infected and a find this horrific 2 days later his leg became infected. So what do you think I should do? Should I call up the school about his PE teacher. Or should I just leave it and not confront the school?

It should definitely have been covered to prevent infection. I say that as someone who has done countless first aid at work courses. Doesn't matter how small cut / graze is, it should be covered. I would raise it (in an unconfrontational manner!)

How old is the child, what did you do to clean the wound when he got home, what do you mean infected? Do you mean a bit red or did he need a trip to the drs for antibiotics.

From the info available child endangerment sounds like a massive over reaction.

To the poster who said school are liable if a parent complains that’s not true. They are only liable if a parent makes a claim for compensation and the school is found (or admits to being) negligent.

Priorities, OP - I don't care what you do about the school- your boy's infected leg is more important. See doctor / health professional asap tomorrow at the latest, and if there's any swelling or heat in the wound /leg make sure he gets antibiotics. See also the comment above re tetanus. Go sooner if he develops a fever.

Fuck me 🙄 buy some TCP and a grip.

Whats all this about plasters anyway. Everybody knows the first aid answer to everything at school is a wet paper towel. Magic stuff.

OP YABU - your child grazed his leg, did a PE lesson and a few days later his graze is infected. The school is not at fault because the didnt give him a useless plaster for a rugby game.

Firstly you cannot prove that it was the PE lesson where the infection occurred- it could have been from the initial injury or any time afterwards. Secondly, your son should have immediately cleaned his leg and then unless it was actively bleeding then it's best to leave it to heal naturally (I'd only say cover it if it is a "wet wound" - ie scabbing hasn't formed yet - and he was wearing trousers etc that might stick to it, and that would only be to protect the clothes until scabbing has formed) and if his injury was so bad he could barely walk he shouldnt have been doing PE at all. Also, after his PE lesson he should have been showering if he was that muddy (or at the very least washing the graze site to get the worst off) while still at school and then showering and cleaning it properly as soon as he got home and then cleaning it daily.

How infected?? Whole leg or just the graze?

So it the 48 hours past the injury it was never once cleaned or had medical aid?

MitziK · 03/12/2019 19:23

So he had a bit of a graze on a knee, they cleaned it up with a saline wipe to check for any large cuts, he didn't need a plaster as he wasn't actually bleeding, and it was just up to you to clean it properly with saline/salt water each day to ensure any infection is dealt with and any bits are out. Then, if he got a bit of gunk underneath, clean it out with some more saline, job done.

It's not the school that did anything wrong here.

You'd benefit from taking a First Aid course.
