Paying extra in case shop makes a mistake.....

I went into a carpet store yesterday and chose a new carpet for my bedroom. When the assistant was working out the cost she took the measurements I had made and added on an extra 10cm to allow for “error!”
Made me think that every time I buy a carpet I am being charged this extra amount! Over the years I must have paid hundreds of pounds extra because of this rule.

AIBU in thinking that the customer shouldn’t be charged the extra in case the shop (or warehouse), cut a piece of carpet too small. If my measurements were wrong fair enough, it would be my fault if the carpet was too small, but surely the supplier should take the responsibility of ensuring that the piece of carpet is cut to the correct size?

Another one here who forgot the threshold and was saved by the extra also pa's another poster said, sometimes walls are not entirely straight.

If you're absolutely convinced your measurements are correct, OP, you could always subtract the 10% from the amount you tell the carpet shop, so that they charge you for the size you want.

Dobby have you tried vinyl /lino in your properties. I ummed and ahhed but have some in my living room now and it's very hard wearing, warm and softer Compared to wood laminate but still has an embossed wood effect and spillages can be mopped up easily.

I needed to order some floor tiles recently online.

They have a calculating thing that you put the measurements into and it says that it adds a small amount for error - can't remember how much but it was 10 something.

Not everyone knows exactly how to measure a room to get the exact measurements to the last cm and if you end up with a small amount short your carpet will be useless.

Fitted carrots are not just the size of the room though, like a giant rug. They are ticked under the edges and tacked/grippered down.

Even in a brand new house, the rooms may not be exactly square.

MidnightCircus · 01/12/2019 16:44

bikerunski I know (hope) that's an autocorrect, but I am loving the idea of fitted carrots Grin

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime yes, I did think about it last time. I’ve had vinyl destroyed too. It depends what is put on it, like a heavy furniture that scuffed it right back...how I don’t know.

Or torn like legs of something, or not cleaned and then it’s beyond cleaning.

Reminds me of the olden days of patterned carpets. Goodness knows how much extra was left over after pattern matching.

@bridgetreilly “if you’re absolutely convinced your measurements are correct, OP, you could always subtract the 10% from the amount you tell the carpet shop, so that they charge you for the size you want.”

I wish it were that simple. I am 100% certain that my measurements are correct, however if I subtract 0.1m from the measurements it wouldn’t solve the issue. The extra amount allows for any error in the measuring. Not necessarily just in my measurements but also in the stores/warehouse measuring the size of the piece to cut off.

For instance if the carpet length is 2.3m, and I say it is 2.2m, I will be charged for 2.3m. However the suppliers guidelines are that a piece of between 2.2m and 2.4m could be cut off. Then if the length is too short I really wouldn’t have a leg to stand on as they would just say my measurements were wrong, not that they had cut off a piece smaller than paid for!

What I am trying to get across is why should the customer pay extra to ensure that they receive the correct size of carpet. It should be the suppliers responsibility, without charging the customer, to ensure that the piece of carpet supplied is at least as big as that paid for, not maybe 0.1m smaller!

@MidnightCircus, ah you spotted the deliberate mistake!
