AIBU to want a smart car or Toyota IQ

I’m due to qualify as a nurse next August (al going well 🤞) And wish to drive and buy a car around then.

I got my licence in 2017 but have only driven on/off. It is highly likely I will work in a large town or city (in Scotland).

I want either a smart car for two or a Toyota IQ. I would get a manual to retain the skills. But I want a small easy to park car suitable for inner city/large town driving.

Everyone seems to turn their nose up at this idea irl so ...

AIBU?

Bucket loads of them in London, two per parking space! I learned to drive in an Aygo and it was fun to drive. I have to have a car with plenty of boot space these days, enjoy little cars while you can, they're cheap to run, easy to park and you can't give loads of people lifts. Downside, they're not much good for a trip to IKEA.

I've had both... in fact I have had three Smartfortwo cars and I bloody love them!
They are brilliant. The newest shape models are far superior (if not quite as cute) as the older ones especially the auto gearbox which is effortless.
They park anywhere have a surprisingly good boot and are fun to drive.
I prefer the Smart over the IQ but that's just me..and don't dismiss the auto.. they are very good.
I've had to give mine up (my last was a 16 plate fortwo auto) as I now have a large dog, but I will definitely have another one day..probably an electric one.

You can park anywhere with them..so easy!

Do some research on the smart cars.. engine often gives up at before 30k miles. Get a Micra.

I've sold Smarts and the latest version is brilliant. The previous ones are bloody awful.

I used to drive an IQ, absolutely loved it

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/12/2019 13:02

I had an Aygo rental car .
Boot is tiny but the most mahoosive rear view parking screen Grin

Fun to drive but I wouldn't want any long distances in it .
Downside is because they take up so little room, every pillock with a monster truck will have half of your space too Hmm

When I took my Parents out (DMum had misplaced her Blue Badge) , we often got back to the car to find it hemmed in, and I had to drive out to let her open the door .

I have a smart forfour. I love it, I've just had DS though and will need a bigger car quite quickly. Which is a shame because I love driving it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/12/2019 13:14

My IQ was actually a motability car, I could get my wheelchair in the back!

There's not a lot of skill involved in changing gear, the not-hitting-other-things part of learning to drive is far more important. Get an automatic, manuals are a concept that should be consigned to the dustbin of history. (Being able to drive at all could be an obsolete skill in the near future, if the self-driving taxis really do take over.)

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/12/2019 16:04

I drive an automatic now, car is up for renewal in May and I'll be getting another.
I can't see the point of a manual unless it's for cost issues.
