Those whose votes don’t influence their seat...

Do you feel less motivated to vote than you wish you did?

To clarify, I will be voting, there’s no chance I won’t. But I do feel a bit flat about the whole thing. I live in a very (understatement!) safe Tory (though this is irrelevant, there must be super safe Labour or other party seats too) seat and I know my vote will never ever make a difference. I know that before walking in there.

How do you find peace with this?

PLEASE VOTE
Because a high turnout, reduced majorities and large numbers of ignored votes will hasten reform

We live in what was John Bercow's constituency so our vote hasn't voted for many years. So quite looking forward to this election. Not sure which way the vote will swing

Theworldisfullofgs · 02/12/2019 16:20

Conservative safe seat. Has been for a century or more. Laziest MP ever.
I'll still vote as I live in hope.

Roussette · 02/12/2019 16:24

Theworld Exactly the same here. Never say never.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/12/2019 16:30

I have voted every election since I was old enough and my vote has never counted. I live in a boring Tory area, Pale and Stale, paint a monkey blue and it would get in. I’ve never ever had a candidate knock on my door and this election the only leaflet I’ve had through the post has been for the Green Party.

nicslackey · 02/12/2019 16:34

Our independent has stood down so it will be DUP here, she kept them out. I will never vote for them. Probably a wasted vote but will vote Alliance as they are at least remain. I would vote labour if there was a candidate.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 02/12/2019 16:37

We're in a place that's been a safe Labour seat since forever. Our MP is the laziest bastard on the planet. He lives abroad and rarely votes. Even if I did want to vote Labour (I don't) I wouldn't vote for this fat, lazy waste of skin.

Neversaygoodbye · 02/12/2019 16:42

@copperstrike76 same constituency here, lib dems did well a few years back and the only leaflets I've received have all been lib dems, the only signs I've seen out locally have been lib dems....I'm seriously hopeful we can finally get rid of Hunt. I've never met anyone who likes him...unless they're all telling porkies, lol. Also as far as I'm aware the area was pro-remain.

egontoste · 02/12/2019 17:06

Another super-safe Tory seat here (51% of the entire vote last time), and is likely to be similar again. I loathe our odious current MP more than words can say.

There isn't a cat in hell's chance of any other main party coming anywhere near that in the next 100 years. I am thrilled that we are one of the few constituencies to have a Monster Raving Loony candidate. And that is who will get my vote.

(And yes, I have read their manifesto)

Roussette · 02/12/2019 17:11

How interesting. I've had leaflets for all the candidates (well.... the main 3 anyway.. Tory, LD, Labour). We have hustings this week with those 3 and the Greens, LD have knocked on my door, and the Labour candidate and his crew were up the road walking around.

And we're unfortunately in a safe tory seat and has been forever. I just hope his majority will be vastly reduced as he's useless. No social media, doesn't reply to emails, no surgeries, and spends most of his time on his country farm on the other side of the country. Disgusting.

yolofish · 02/12/2019 18:10

I think I posted earlier about my visit from the Tory canvasser.

What is interesting, is that in 21 years of living in a safe Tory seat, we've never been canvassed before - our house is hard to find. Yet this guy found us, and tramped across a field to actually talk to me. I think they're worried...

copperstrike76 · 02/12/2019 22:36

I do hope so @Alsohuman. It's time for a change, I feel.

@Neversaygoodbye the LibDems have definitely been way more active than any of the other candidates in terms of campaigning. I am 43 but I hope that the younger people voting for the first time might make a difference. And yes, the constituency voted to remain in the referendum - only just but still. You could argue that in supporting Brexit, Jeremy Hunt is going against what his constituents voted for.

PatsyStone39 · 03/12/2019 18:31

I'm voting for the first time in 12 years (for labour) despite assuming it won't count. I'm in Caroline Lucas' constituency and i am pretty sure she will be re-elected.

megletthesecond · 03/12/2019 18:35

Ultra safe Tory seat but I've always voted. Our Labour candidate won't win this year but I'll stick my cross in a box. They're the nearest to the Tories anyway.

MT2017 · 03/12/2019 18:36

Super safe Tory seat here (ex PM's constituency and she is still the MP).

I absolutely cannot STAND the lying mendacious cheating tosser who is the current one so I will be voting for someone else.

Hopefully lots of people feel the same way Wink

Ragwort · 03/12/2019 18:42

I always vote, and depressingly in general elections the candidate I vote for has never been elected (& I am over 60 so many years of voting) Grin. I always seem to move from safe Tory seat to safe Tory seat ...
I do have more luck in local elections.
But I consider it is essential to vote & have never, ever missed a vote.

Ragwort · 03/12/2019 18:44

I used to live in your constituency MT Grin.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/12/2019 18:48

I’m super slide to that constituency!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/12/2019 18:48

Omg! Super close

Windmyonlyfriend · 03/12/2019 18:49

I think we’re in the same constituency OP - it’s been unbroken Tory here since 1880. I think it’s the longest held Conservative seat in the country.

I’ll be voting but I do find it demoralising. No one bothers to canvass here - I haven’t even had a leaflet through the door. But I live in hope that slowly slowly things might start to change and I want to be part of driving that change.

BrainAcheRemedy · 03/12/2019 18:51

I’m not sure there is such a thing as a safe seat this time. Look at these statistics about the votes in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 2015 and 2017 www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/constituencies/E14000810. This is a former mining/industrial town, almost 100 years a Labour stronghold. It voted in a Conservative in 2017. The Labour Party has let this part of the country down for decades and the chickens are coming home to roost.

No doubt Tory strongholds will fall in the south. There is everything to play for.

I’ll be voting Green (hello EnthusiasmisDisturbed). There are things I don’t like about their policies, but I believe climate change is our biggest threat. They have a zero chance of getting in here in this Tory stronghold (or anywhere really).

rhubarbcrumbles · 03/12/2019 18:51

It could be worse....I have a close family member standing as a candidate for the party I dislike most. Xmas dinner is going to be interesting in our house. It's a safe seat for their party too.

AgeLikeWine · 03/12/2019 18:56

I live in one of the safest Tory seats in the Midlands. It has always been true blue, and the Tory got a big majority even in the 1997 Labour landslide.

I always vote, on principle. It may be a complete waste of time, but I don’t care.

Spudlet · 03/12/2019 18:56

It is definitely a bit demoralising, I must say. I’ve always voted and I will this time too, but it definitely feels like shouting into the void. It’s also hard to muster any enthusiasm for any of the parties this time around. Some are more abysmal than others but they’re all pretty crap, imo.

All the tactical voting sites point me towards Labour, but I don’t know. I voted for them last time, then the Maybot spun votes for Labour into a sign of widespread support for Brexit Angry I don’t want to see that happen again. If feeling that your voice doesn’t count is demoralising, hearing someone put words into your mouth is infuriating.

If you look at www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/homepage.html you can choose your ward and get predictions including a % chance of each party winning.
