Words or phrases you love

As a kind of follow on from the ‘Words or phrases you can’t stand’ thread I thought I’d start a sister one for words and phrases you love.

So to kick off, the expression “egg in the nest” never fails to amuse me when referring to a gentleman with a bald patch, eg. “I saw Clive the other day, he’s got a bit of an egg in the nest nowadays hasn’t he?”

Also “tumbleweed”

'Calm your passion' and 'Bye Felicia' both make me laugh!

kshaw · 30/11/2019 21:14

'hod up a chew'...said in a very Leeds accent and means 'hold on a second'...I love saying it even if dh thinks I'm weird and did at one point think I was making it up but my grandad says it a lot and I think it is a really expressive turn of phrase.

Nithering - for when it’s really cold
Mafting - for when it’s too hot.

They’re words from my home town and now I don’t live there I use them all the time.

Gambolling-as in lambs not William Hill.

Sandals19 · 30/11/2019 22:43

In my Northern Irish town there is a (somewhat gallows-humour-y) phrase "a sniper wouldn't take him/her out" for an unattractive person .. the coastal version is "the tide wouldn't take him/her out".

Sandals19 · 30/11/2019 22:46

Also from here (though maybe they're used elsewhere in the British isles) "showed up with two arms the one length" fir arrived without a gift/present.

"Shy weeans don't get no sweeties" to refer to people not being forward/assertive enough.

Sandals19 · 30/11/2019 22:47

"not backward in coming forward" for the opposite (a pushy/over confident person).

Sandals19 · 30/11/2019 22:50

"He/she would argue in an empty house" for an argumentative/aggressive person.

So many n Irish sayings - a tuakky I've realised these are more sayings than phrases so maybe not suitable vfir this thread Blush.

Merename · 30/11/2019 22:50

A bit of a cheat but currently loving youngests first words and pronunciation. Daddy is something like da-dnnnng.

And dreich, Scots word for wet and grey and yuk, describes it well.
