To ask if you ever put stuff in the garden overnight in winter when your fridge is full?

I do this occasionally, it feels elicit and wrong but logically I think it's fine?

Eg last night. Made a big pot of curry for friends visiting this weekend. Finished cooking at 9.30pm.

I could either put this steaming cauldron in the fridge, put it in numerous sinkfuls of cold water until the core reached something cool, or pop it on the patio in the back garden where the temp was about the same as a fridge, and the supply of extra cold is near infinite.

If I hadn't been going to bed early then I might have brought it in at 11 to move to the fridge, but as it is I left it out overnight

At 7am the temp was ~4.5, that's within the normal range for a fridge, so scientifically I don't see how this could be bad.

Does anyone else do this?

We don't get foxes and it was a big heavy lidded pot, so no wildlife concerns.

If I did that it would be covered in slugs.

I've kept drinks in the shed though. They are sometimes colder than out of the fridge.

We have a boot room with no heating so booze and Christmas food gets hoiked out there as it’s fucking freezing!

IamPickleRick · 01/12/2019 00:48

My son was born at Christmas and I was in for a week. It was so cold that we used the outside windowsill at the hospital for keeping our yoghurts and milk.

Bouledeneige · 01/12/2019 00:51

With a pre-cooked meal like yours I'd also just leave it on the job.

But I usually have to do this with my turkey for Xmas day. It has to be big enough to feed 16 and I don't have room to keep it in the fridge. As my foxes would go mad for it I put it in a zipped up freezer storage bag or put it in a storage box sellotaped shut.

JadeDragon23 · 01/12/2019 00:53

Outside on the patio for drinks, in the car boot for food. Especially at Xmas, the giant turkey usually lives in the boot for a couple of days.

I always used to use a space by our back door for things like milk and pop, however I got a little fridge a few years back which is in the shed.

I have just been in there to grab a can that was on top of the fridge and it was colder than those inside!

ultrablue · 01/12/2019 01:09

I leave stuff outside zipped up in my cool bag sometimes.

One Christmas when I was younger it had snowed and I remember my mom digging a hole in it and putting a frozen turkey in for a couple of days lol x

RainbowMum11 · 01/12/2019 01:32

Yes always if hosting, as long as it was cold enough and things were sealed - common sense, surely?

safariboot · 01/12/2019 02:24

One year I buried the freezer contents in the snow overnight and defrosted the freezer.

KittyMarmalade · 01/12/2019 02:30

Conservatory, yes. A lot around Xmas. I save the fridge for things that really need the low temps (meat, dairy etc) and use the conservatory for drinks, fruit, veg and all the jars of jam, ketchup etc that live there year round also get a holiday out there!

WeePinklet · 01/12/2019 08:08

Yes :) I keep my excess Christmas veggies in bags in the coal bunker Grin

etherealbeauty · 01/12/2019 14:35

Yes I always do.
Especially bottles of soft drinks, milk, etc

adaline · 01/12/2019 14:37

At university I used my balcony as a fridge beer storage space in winter!

GuyFawkesDay · 01/12/2019 14:40

Yep, shed is great for drinks, fruit and veg. Put veg in plastic boxes though to keep "friends" out.

All the drinks stay really cold too with a bit of luck.

MileyWiley · 01/12/2019 14:42

@Owlsintowels my cats stole 5 medium spiced tikka lamb chops and throughly enjoyed them earlier this week. Spice clearly not a deterrent!

AwdBovril · 01/12/2019 14:43

Storing food - no. Cooling it - yes, definitely. Regularly. It looks a bit weird after, though, I often put a big pan of stew in the snow to cool, move it about a few times after it's melted a hole in the snow... it looks like aliens have landed because of all the perfectly round melted holes. In summer I have to make do with using a sinkful of cold water which isn't nearly as much fun

Alittleprivacyplease · 01/12/2019 14:47

At the moment I could put the entire contents of my freezer outside overnight and it'd still be frozen in the morning. Hasn't reached above freezing here last few days. Pretty sure any liquids would freeze so no can't put fridge items outside, it's too cold! On the plus side no slugs or other garden beasties, they're either dead or frozen solid Smile.
