... to think this was a scam call?

Just answered my landline and got a recorded message, ostensibly from BT, our ISP, saying my landline and internet would be terminated at noon today. It advised me to press 1 for further info and 2 to accept termination.

I pressed 1 and the phone was answered quickly by a man with a south Asian accent. He said I was through to BT and started telling me that my internet connection was no longer secure or safe. The signal kept breaking up and it sounded like a mobile phone, and there was no end of background noise. It sounded like the guy was in a noisy bar or similar public place.

I asked him to give me my BT account number so that I could be sure he was from BT, but he just carried on telling me my internet security was at risk. This happened several times. The connection was so poor that I couldn't hear what he was saying properly, but he certainly wasn't giving me the account number. At no point did he address me by name, despite the account being in my name.

I've read about calls where scammers pretend to be from BT and get all sorts of info out of unsuspecting people. Was I BU to think this may have been a scam attempt?

I had someone helpfully wanting to transfer us to an improved telephone preference system which would block spam calls from abroad as well as the UK. It sounded OK at first, till they insisted that they needed my bank card details "just to check the account" and couldn't explain how those details could conceivably help them check an account which happens to be in DH's name.

I had this scam I had just started taking sertraline and was a wee bit confused as to why they were calling me apparently its because he is well paid so he can have a woman to share his bed in the mornings I screamed down the phone at him calling him a pervert and all sorts then hung up the kids were 😱😱😱 then laughed fortunately strangely they never rang back

@LakieLady

Don't worry about it - I mean (almost) falling for it. We all (including me) think we wouldn't fall for a scam, and we are all cute and savvy and not easily fooled. And for the most part we are. Many people have been caught out though, because they are not expecting it.

And if a call comes through when they HAVE had issues with their broadband (or bank for example,) that pupports to be from the internet provider or bank, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking it's real. Not least because they sound very convincing, and sometimes even know something about you.

Report it to BT (as you said,) and next time hang up.

Sadly, there are some horrible people out there, out to con and fleece innocent, hardworking people. Some scammers have conned people out of EVERYthing they have got.

Watch COLD CALL if you get the chance.

Should be on Channel 5 catch-up-on-demand. It's sooooooooo good. After watching that, you probably never fall for a phone scam!

www.channel5.com/show/cold-call/

4 one-hour long episodes. Brilliant. It's got some great performances, and is worth watching just to see Sally Lindsay!

As a few posters have said, check your account online, to see if you have been charged a load of money for the scam call. If you have, and you're quick, BT may cancel the charges (that resulted for the scam call.)

We've had this probably 20 times.

With anything.... banks, internet, BT whoever... I don't know why anyone would press 1 or engage.

Put the phone down.

Get another phone (mobile) and ring your bank or BT or who rang and check it out. I am suspicious by nature and I'm glad I am.

If I were you, I'd carefuly check your phone bill. Just pressing 1 must've set up something unwanted.

Although I did have a scam call on my mobile they asked me how to spell my surname? I said it's on the screen can you not see it? Ahh yes but just confirm it and your first name for security 🤔 first name you surname dickhead......I spelt it out it took a second for the penny to drop then they hung up on me 🤷‍♀️ I think I'm on the block list

LakieLady · 29/11/2019 10:44

And if a call comes through when they HAVE had issues with their broadband

It's not even had, @MistyCloud, only last night the internet was down for about 45 mins. It's kind of become our normal. I sometimes wish we could go back to dial-up, we never had a problem then!

The latest one appears to be an Amazon Prime scam so be warned !
Not by Amazon I hasten to add !

itwaseverthus · 29/11/2019 10:54

I've had two calls this week, both automated robotic voices saying my internet is going to be disconnected due to illegal use, press 1 to speak to a director. Obviously a scam but unnerving and a coincidence I was waiting on SKY to change my broadband due to outages.

PettyContractor · 29/11/2019 10:55

The Amazon Prime one is a call to help you cancel Prime. It helped give away it was a scam that they didn't actually quote the correct figure for what Prime costs...

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/11/2019 10:59

I never answer the phone unless i know who they are. I look the number up to see who it is, normally its a scam.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/11/2019 11:06

I did 1471, and it's a mobile number, so I'll report it

I'm only surprised the number was available; on the ones I get they're almost always witheld

Report the calls by all means but there's often no point; if they originate from outside the UK there's nothing to be done, and even if they're here there's little chance of tracking them down

elspeth18 · 29/11/2019 11:07

pettycontractor it also gave it away to me because I dont have an Amazon account !

Jaxhog · 29/11/2019 11:24

I've had that call too. Several times. It is definitely a scam.

RingtheBells · 29/11/2019 11:31

I had to put my landline on constant do not disturb mode to stop the never ending scam calls disturbing my day, I just made all my contacts VIP so they could get through if they want, it has stopped all the scammers getting through.
