...that my cat runs away whenever he hears me singing? I sing along to tunes on my MP3 player, but as soon as he hears me the cat jumps off the sofa and dives out of the cat flap! Is this because he's a rescue cat? Would a cat with a more stable background be better able to cope with it??

I used to have a cat who was furious if you sang and would come and tell you off.
Sang all the more...

PurplePuffinPicker · 28/11/2019 23:23

I saw a clip of a cat who attacks his owner everytime she starts singing. He's pretty violent. Grin So you're not alone.

TheClaws · 29/11/2019 00:09

My cat looks at me like there is a fire alarm going off and we must all EVACUATE NOW! Stupid woman person!

1Morewineplease · 29/11/2019 00:11

When you say ‘singing,’ are you hitting all the right notes... or singing the right notes in the wrong order?
I wouldn’t dream of asking you if you were...maybe...errr... hitting the wrong notes.

The whole family runs away when I start to sing, not just the cat Sad I only sing when I'm alone in the car. Mind you, we did used to have a daft old dog who'd join in, howling along while I sang. I miss her, we were quite the party act Grin

BarbeDwyer · 29/11/2019 00:16

I used to have a dog that howled when someone sang.

MistyCloud · 29/11/2019 00:24

My younger cat jumps up and rubs herself against me, and purrs loudly when I sing. She must like it. Smile

My older cat walks off though. Sad

We used to have two cats -brother and sister - that had completely different attitudes to music and singing.

The male would come and sit against the bottom of the piano when I played.

Both my DDs used to sing and would often practice in the living room. No matter where he was, he could be out in the garden, or which one of them was singing, he would come rushing into the room, jump onto the sofa and sit and listen the whole time.

The female on the other hand, when I played the piano, would jump up onto a nearby stool, lean towards me and meow continuously until I stopped.

If she was in the room when my DDs sang she was rush from the room as if it was the worse sound she'd ever heard.

Both DDs have great singing voices so it was nothing to do with singing ability; one cat liked music, one didn't.

DontCallMeShitley · 29/11/2019 00:36

One of mine would sing along with me. Felt sorry for the neighbours.

Cactusmum · 29/11/2019 02:51

My cat tries to attack me if I whistle, she also attacks the house phone (but not the mobile Confused) if I'm on hold and it's on speakerphone. I think there must be certain tones that hurt her ears or upset her in some way, can cats suffer from misophonia I wonder Hmm

My cat would make me rock him to sleep singing the theme song from a tv show. I miss him.

@orewineplease Good point. It's possible that the notes may not be coming out in the right order Grin

Mine used to join in with me.

I sounded about as good as her so there's no accounting for taste Grin

WeePinklet · 29/11/2019 11:04

@JObriensbollox

I think cats have sensitive ears and loud or unpleasant noises upset them.

What are you trying to suggest? Confused Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 29/11/2019 11:10

Mine are scared of tin foil.

I once pulled some off the roll, not making that much noise I hasten to add, while they were eating and the whole lot of them did that panicked scrabble where they start slipping around and then bolted for the catflap causing a pile up (we have 4 of our own and foster rescue cats, so there could have been 6, 8, 10 of them, I don't remember) in the haste to escape from the terror.

It was funny but obviously also upsetting that I'd inadvertently caused them that much distress and now I'm much more mindful with the tinfoil roll.
