Road works at 9pm

Not sure if IABU. Sleep deprived with a 13 month old who won't sleep due to loud road works just outside the house. There's a van with bright flashing orange lights on too so my room (where my son sleeps too) is currently flashing. Is this normal? Seems a bit late to me. It's so loud! WIBU to complain? (Not sure who to...)

Difficult. Maybe because it would cause traffic chaos if done earlier in the day?

bakabakabeyond · 28/11/2019 21:09

Probably. I think it's the fact that my son was so close to sleep before my room turned in to a disco and now he is wide awake again (and desperate to see out the window!)

They are now drilling 🤷‍♀️

It might be an emergency.

bakabakabeyond · 28/11/2019 21:18

True. I think my lack of sleep over the last week is getting the better of me.

Your LA will have rules on permitted hours noisy works & this will definitely breach it as it's usually 6/7pm latest, though varies from place to place.

This is likely emergency works on gas mains or similar, they get to work any time as it's an emergency. If it doesn't look like that ring your council EHL in the morning as you do occasionally get pee takers who think they can work when they like. We've had it in our street. Turned out they were meant to be done by 6pm

HunnyMummy1993 · 28/11/2019 21:20

Unlikely be Road works, as such. Much more likely to be utilities emergency works.

You are unlikely to get far by complaining, i would imagine there’s a number to call on one of the signs, but I think you’ll get a soothing and sympathetic brush off at best.

ChocolateOrangeIsAFruit · 28/11/2019 21:21

We had the road closed outside our house last year and they resurfaced overnight ...it was quite noisy

bakabakabeyond · 28/11/2019 21:24

I just want my boy to sleep. I'm exhausted.

Mummyshark2018 · 28/11/2019 21:26

It will likely be emergency, they wouldn't plan to do it at this time. We had a burst pipe on our road and digging from 8pm until 7am and then the road was blocked to let tarmac dry. Not pleasant but necessary.

Singlebutmarried · 28/11/2019 21:30

Have you got some tin foil? Moisten the window and ‘stick’ the tin foil to it shiney side in.

It’ll keep the light out.

Not sure what you can do for the noise though

AlexaAmbidextra · 28/11/2019 21:55

Councils frequently schedule things like road resurfacing overnight as to close the roads during the day would cause too much disruption. The usual prohibited noise hours don’t apply.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 28/11/2019 22:06

Yes, it will be emergency works. I live on a main road, so things like this happen every now and then. Annoying, but I'd rather have power/heat/water etc and that everyone was safe.

Josephinebettany · 28/11/2019 22:44

Is there another room you can sleep in even until it's finished?
