To be considering leaving my job because of this?

I live in a village about 5 miles from work.

There are ongoing roadworks just outside the village meaning road closures and diversions.

It isn’t an exaggeration to say that at peak times it’s like an island, no one can get in or out. It takes me an hour and a half to get to work. Coming home is hit and miss.

I’m utterly sick to death of it.

AIBU?

Can you start and finish at nine peak times?

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 07:48

No it isn’t flexible. In any case different roads are closed every day so I go to work with no clue as to how I’m going to get home again.

Can you park the other side of the roadworks and walk to your car?

Pumpkintopf · 28/11/2019 07:49

How long will the roadworks be going on for?

GooseFeather · 28/11/2019 07:50

How long has it been going on for? How long will it continue to go on for? Don't you need the income? And if you worked somewhere else, wouldn't you still have the same problem?

PerrysWinkle · 28/11/2019 07:50

Seems a bit extreme to leave a job due to a temporary situation. I appreciate it’s frustrating but it will end. Could you cycle there instead? Bikes can get past roadworks where cars can’t.

JuniperBeer · 28/11/2019 07:51

Is cycling an option?

Do you need a job? If so, you’ll just have to get another one if you leave your current role right? And still have to leave the village? You’ll be in the same position.
Can you leave earlier in the morning? Means you will probably arrive at work super early but means you’ll be less frustrated!

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 07:51

Lol Atilla the roadworks are several miles long Smile

As for how long who knows, years probably

Cycle

gonewiththerain · 28/11/2019 07:56

Could you set off earlier and go supermarket shopping, have a coffee or breakfast out some days or go swimming or to the gym. Something that needs doing or you like to do that gets you away from peak time travel at least once a day.

Jimjamjong · 28/11/2019 07:56

cycle or scooter (Decathlon has some nice adult ones) or satnav app that will have the roadwork on (alternatively check googlemaps as it usually has the traffic on it depending on your area).

Bluesheep8 · 28/11/2019 07:58

Years? Roadworks going on for years? Isn't there another route?

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 07:58

I really can’t cycle, it’s 5 miles via motorway but more like 8 via villages. It’s ripping with rain and pitch dark. My life is honestly shit enough without a 20 mile bike ride every day Sad

OP posts:
LazyDaisey · 28/11/2019 07:58

If it’s years, then you must’ve known about it years in advance too.

Verily1 · 28/11/2019 07:58

Look up roadworks online before you leave. My iPhone maps tells me the quickest route taking into account road works.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 28/11/2019 07:58

Use your phone (assuming it’s a smart phone) to get directions to work everyday, it will take you the quickest route avoiding the worst queues.

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 07:58

The problem is blue everyone goes the other route meaning traffic is just awful

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 28/11/2019 07:59

X post Verily. Great minds.

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 07:59

I do yippee but my phone doesn’t always know which roads will be closed on any one day so often tried to send me on routes that aren’t an option. If takes me anything up to an hour and a half to get in!

Well can you afford it quit your job over roadworks?

Seems extreme to me.

Newmumma83 · 28/11/2019 08:01

I would leave earlier and have coffee and chill the otherwise still a pain but takes worry out of it

fadedafternoons · 28/11/2019 08:02

You weren’t, don’t worry Smile I’m surprised how much it’s getting me down but I’m leaving at 645 and getting home at 7. I feel like daylight is a distant dream!
