to think the Tories are lying about getting 50,000 more nurses in the NHS

There are 280,000 registered nurses in the NHS
They are going to recruit and train 35,000 more.

They said there would be 330,000 nurses in 5 years time.
They said they would do this by improving retention.

Can any anyone explain this?

If they don't keep those nurses, there will be 280,000 - 15,000 + 35,000 which is 300,000.

Can anyone explain Conservative maths?

I think it will be a struggle to even maintain current numbers.
A nurse friend was telling me that within her group of 5 nurse friends, 4 had retired by 58, she’s the only one still in the NHS and she’d leave if she could.
There are better career choices for women these days, gone are the days when around 25% of school leavers went into nursing.

Maybe he had the same maths teacher as Diane Abbot

Or Nicky Morgan:

So 'more' includes nurses already in post who will be persuaded to stay?

Like if I offered "More custard, anyone?" and then said, "You've already had it, just don't throw it up."

Riiiiiiiight.

kingsassassin · 28/11/2019 08:16

None of the parties have any deliverable pledges.

Huge infrastructure spending - who's going to do that then? There is a shortage of trained construction workers - partly responsible for the huge numbers of Eastern European workers who've come over to work in the construction industry. Nowhere near enough people are being trained.

All the parties are lying about what they're going to do. The chances of any of them actually delivering on more than 1% of it is minuscule so they're all lying.

SpotlessMind · 28/11/2019 08:25

There are already 1000s of nursing vacancies unfilled, what’s the point of creating more? Improve working conditions if you want to retain and attract nurses and other nhs staff.

The DfE require school age children to do complex mathematics. The government who instruct the DfE can't do simple addition or subtraction.

TL:DR - either they are incredibly stupid, or they're lying.

Waitrosescheapestvodka · 28/11/2019 08:31

We can't recruit into our current posts. In mental health lots of Trusts are offering 'golden hellos' of 2-3k and still not filling their vacancies.

They are lying. Again.

My midwife is from up North. She came here to study and planned to go back but she couldn't get a job there. In London, she had the choice of every hospital and got positions in 3. She said the shortage is geographical. There are lots of posts in London. Her BF is a physiotherapist and has no qualms leaving his job so they can go travelling for 6 months because he says he can easily get a job when he gets back. Shes taking a sabbatical.

They are all lying. Don’t people see this?

Labour are going to build 100,000 council houses a year. How? Who will build them?

Labour are going to nationalise utilities by swapping them for government bonds. They can’t do this under EU Law - even the Guardian agrees.

All the parties are lying through their teeth. They all think voters are idiots.

greenlobster · 28/11/2019 09:13

The numbers don't add up because they haven't mentioned that they need to be adjusted to take account for the fact that in 5 years time half, if not all, of the NHS will have been sold off.

Labour's council houses will be built by unicorns and fairies.

Politicians are all lying bastards.

I think Tory ministers need it phrasing in things they can understand.

Imagine you have 280 MPs. You might lose 15 because they might not get reelected.

But you don't lose those MPs. You manage to keep those seats. You then get 35 more MPs because you win some more seats.

You now have 315 MPs. You could have had 265 MPs if you hadn't done anything. So yes, you would have had 50 more MPs than if you hadn't done anything,.

But you do not have 330 MPs.
