To return over priced breast pump?

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:05

I’m almost sure that IANBU but just need my head wobbled.
Went to the Mothercare closing down sale today.

Knowledgable sales assistant talked us through breast pumps but the store was chaos. SA pointed out a couple were wrong prices and moved these around handing us the box she’d recommended from a price sign that read £108.99 all well and good and a saving of 25% or so we thought.

Tills were very crowded, long queues and several items wouldn’t scan. Poor young cashier got stressed and kept setting off security alarm piercing loud high pitched noise- I felt sorry for her but other customers with babies got annoyed. We paid and left quickly. The total seemed high and was gonna check receipt in car but down poured with rain and got sidetracked.

Just checked and the pump has been charged at £187.99 - it’s even £10 cheaper on Argos without the supposed 25% discount so something has obviously gone wrong. Either it was mislabelled price or the till hasn’t discounted it. Either way I wouldn’t pay that for this pump.

Box unopened - items untouched - can I just take it back tomorrow and expect they either correct the price or refund it?

Yeah I'd have a go, that's a lot of money!

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:07

I tried to check price online but this exact one is no longer on there. The single one is on at £108.99 though so think this may have been the cause of mislabelled price

Definitely n

Sexnotgender · 26/11/2019 21:08

I’d definitely return!!

Saltdoughmuncher · 26/11/2019 21:08

Yes take it back and explain.

The best pump is a medella swing in my experience and I’m sure they aren’t that expensive.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 26/11/2019 21:15

You might not be able to. When our local mothercare shut down last year I was told they would not be accepting returns unless faulty, and even then it would be replacement only

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:16

I’ve just found it on the website. Doesn’t come up on a search though as out of stock.

It is selling for £187.99 - says it was £249.99 originally but can’t see how it’s any different to the one in Argos or on the actual meddle site for £175 unless I’m missing something. It’s a double swing maxi flex

I tried to return an unopened breast pump and nipple shields and they said flat no due to hygiene 🙁

Thehop · 26/11/2019 21:19

Go back and insist they charge you the right price!

ballsdeep · 26/11/2019 21:20

I doubt they would refund if it was in a closing down sale

chuck7 · 26/11/2019 21:24

Are they accepting refunds?

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:25

@Urbosa

That’s what I’m afraid of.
I’m actually 6 months pregnant so it’s not like I’ve used any of it but still I’m guessing it’s a bit like pierced earrings.
Also just realised that the medela site have a 30% sale on currently and Argos don’t actually have it in stock anywhere near me.

May just have to swallow the £12.99 over payment maybe worth it for the advice we got.

You need to email head office or customer services first because they won't change it or refund as they are closing down,
How did you get charged that amount, didn't you check before you entered your pin???
Because that is what they will say.

TruffleShuffles · 26/11/2019 21:28

I think mothercare are only doing refunds for items purchased before they went into administration.

strawberry2017 · 26/11/2019 21:30

They are only doing refunds for faulty items. I don't think you have a case sadly.

icantfind · 26/11/2019 21:31

I bought something the other day from mothercare and they were quite clear no refunds or returns on the items.

Sadly they had signs up staying staff would not accept verbal abuse.

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/11/2019 21:34

Try selling it for the price you bought it on Ebay or Amazon. You should be able to get someone interested as it is new

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:36

@noworlater13

We bought quite a lot of items and DH paid on joint card. I couldn’t hear the amount clearly as security alarm was going off again and when I said ‘that seems high’ as we were leaving it down poured and we got distracted. It was weirdly busy for a Tuesday, theres was nowhere in or outside the shop to stop and check. Trust me I’m usually very careful when paying to make sure it’s exactly the right amount.

Think I’ll just write it off tbh and swallow the difference.

TheRightHonerable · 26/11/2019 21:38

@icantfind

They didn’t say it to us and only signs up were about gift vouchers not being accepted.
Tbh I felt quite sorry for the poor girl behind the till. Nothing was scanning, alarm kept going off, people were getting very irritated.

There's a lot of reason as to why you got sold the wrong thing and didn't realise.
When a store closes down and give discounts it's because they need you to buy the stuff quickly, the rules that apply before do not anymore.
If your unhappy it doesn't mean anything to them be the store is going.
Also you state the item was marked wrong but that could be because someone moved it and retailers do not have to sell you the item for the wrong price, they just have to move it.
Give it a go if you want but it probably won't happen. The mothercare I was in the other day, all the staff where stressing about their jobs I don't think they will be very helpful because you bought the wrong item
