£20 is too much for 1 photo??

We've recently had a family photoshoot. The photos are available to view and are very nice. We have already paid a session fee but now to purchase the photos, it's a further £150 for the whole album of about 15 images or £20 each?! I booked it through a friend who led me to believe that you get some of the photos on a memory stick and more are available to purchase. To be honest the website was worded quite cleverly to also suggest you get digital images included. Anyway I was willing to buy more photos but wasn't expecting them to be this expensive. We only like about 7 of the images, so will cost us £140 for the 7.
Does anyone know if this is the standard rate?? A quick google suggested that this is way more expensive than the norm.
About 5 years ago we had another shoot that cost £100 and all photos on a CD included.
Any strategies for negotiation? Or Aibu?

You've nothing to lose trying to negotiate. They can't exactly sell them to someone else.

Ask about the memory stick option too.

Streamside · 25/11/2019 23:53

It depends on how much the sitting fee was and what size and quality the photos are.Twenty pounds isn't much for a 10x8 photo for example.Remember you're paying for the photographers time processing the images and professional labs aren't cheap for prints.I'd imagine they make offer packs with a variety of sizes included maybe that's something you should ask. Many photographers will sell you the digital prints on a USB so that might be an option.

ratherstuck · 26/11/2019 00:06

@Streamside well I understand about the photo processing costs which is why I double checked but it is just digital files. No prints.

So when we get these files, we will pay again ourselves to have them printed Confused

You’re buying the right to print out and share a digital file.

ratherstuck · 26/11/2019 00:12

The sitting fee was £35 for 20mins.
I was expecting maybe £70 to £100 for a digital album.

But the pricing is £150 for the digital album or £140 for 7 image files. The album is just duplicate/ variations of the ones we like. So not much point even in getting all the images.

I'm a photographer and it's difficult to get the pricing correct to be honest. The sitting time could have been more generous but you obviously like the photos and presumably can pick as few as you wish ie:a group photo which presumably will of a quality which you can as you wish with will cost you 55pds including the sitting fee.Be careful where you get them printed .

BitchyArriver · 26/11/2019 00:36

The photo fee seems expensive but the sitting fee is far too cheap.

It seems silly to pay almost 95% of the cost for 50% of the pictures, negotiate! Like a PP said above, they can’t exactly sell them to someone else.

I bet if you said politely that you got confused about what was included, and that you can’t justify £140 they will meet in the middle.

If they would accept £10 per photo then that’s £105 for 7 professional images. Not too bad when you think about the time, equipment and skill needed.

Pilot12 · 26/11/2019 00:46

Where I live it's £10-£15 per digital image.

Dita73 · 26/11/2019 04:32

Hate to tell you but that is cheap. My daughter just had her family photographed and I wished that was all the pictures cost

Baileyscheesecake · 26/11/2019 05:54

Sounds average price for professional photos. If you really like the photos then go for it. Photos are amongst my most precious belongings.

Streamside · 26/11/2019 11:48

You don't have to take all of the photos, the sitting fee covers the photographer to some extent.I don't particularly like their business model but photography is very competitive and extremely undervalued. Personally ,I wouldn't undervalue the photographer by asking for a discount.
