To stop Roast Dinners

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/11/2019 23:02

From now until Xmas day?

I just feel like itll take the shine off the roast on the day if we still have them every week.
Does anyone else do this?
Dh and ds were like Shock when I told them. They love a sunday dinner.

I don't do roasts normally. But I give up, chocolate, crisps, cake and only have Baileys at a Christmas Market (if at all). So I feel that Christmas is a real treat.

My DD (22) has a full English for breakfast and I have a version of one. Black pudding for her makes it special. We do this for Easter as well.

We have the £10 M&S steaks for Christmas Dinner.

SlothMama · 26/11/2019 10:15

I do this, I won't have a roast now until Christmas day

JemSynergy · 26/11/2019 10:16

I love roast dinners, we don't have one for about two weeks before Christmas and we also have one on NYD as we do another mini Christmas then too. Obviously Christmas dinner and NYD is a more extravagant version.

shearwater · 26/11/2019 10:16

I've stopped doing roast meat as DDs never liked the meat. I have only rarely done Sunday lunch at actual lunch time as it is a right arseache to cook on a Sunday morning and we have a late breakfast/brunch anyway. So we have it for Sunday dinner. I do veggie roasts, or another kind of meal that takes a bit longer than weekday dinners and also includes pudding, on a Sunday.

@Mushypeasandchipstogo, it's not being lazy to cook. Life has changed. Lots of people go out more than we used to.

I stopped doing a roast because it ties you all to being in. Then it was because my eating habits changed.

ACautionaryTale · 26/11/2019 10:23

I do .

But only because in the month up to Christmas we have "Eat out of the freezer month"

This means there is space in there to freeze the Christmas left overs.

There's only two of us (me and DH) but I still do a Turkey (small one), Goose and Ham.

Lots of left overs.

Plus lots and lots of stock made from the bones of the ham and the Turkey.

EmmiJay · 26/11/2019 10:26

@Mushypeasandchipstogo Just because people aren't cooking a roast, doesn't mean they aren't cooking at all Confused and a roast dinner is hardly a huge deal to cook anyway. The oven does most of the leg work there lol.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/11/2019 10:35

Exactly. We often go out cycling or hiking at the weekend. If we arrive home early evening very hungry, no-one wants to spend quite an intense hour to hour and a half preparing veg, watching pans, making gravy etc before we can eat.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 26/11/2019 10:42

We generally have a roast every Sunday, though this week's was delayed til yesterday as I was totally wiped out on Sunday (pregnancy related). I don't think they're that much work - just shove things in the oven at regular intervals then the last few bits on the hob - easy!

I'm away for Christmas so we'll have our dinner on the Saturday before, and I'll be leaving DP with enough leftovers to last the week. Anything he doesn't want he can freeze.

Whathappenedtothelego · 26/11/2019 10:44

Hmm, I think this is a good idea actually.

Not sure the family would agree though... and it means we have already had our last roast, as next Sunday is 1st Dec.

I always do a Sunday roast and proper pudding in Autumn and Winter, probably stop around Easter time.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/11/2019 10:45

I really enjoy my xmas dinner and general xmas goodies but I crave spicy indian food a couple of days after as an antidote to all the stodgy "traditional" xmas stuff

OP posts:
PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/11/2019 10:49

@FizzyIce lol I dont find it hard in any way I just want it to feel like a treat

AnnaMagnani · 26/11/2019 10:54

That's a really good idea!

Plus also, how many people do roast dinners every Sunday? Surely there are loads of special Sunday meals that aren't roasts?

I like cooking and would get bored if it was a roast every week.

my2bundles · 26/11/2019 11:23

We have meat/veg/mash meal 4 times a week. Not a full roast every time , chicken breasts etc. The rest of the time it's pasta/salads etc. Couldn't imagine not doing another untill Christmas.

RightYesButNo · 26/11/2019 11:28

as much champagne as you cab drink ejen in charge if dc

Have you already started on that champagne, @P1nkHeartLovesCake? Wink

francienolan · 26/11/2019 14:00

We almost never cook a roast at home outside the holidays. We just did one for thanksgiving and my pescatarian parents are here for Christmas so it will be salmon then. Various work parties etc though are always a roast dinner at Christmas though so we stick to our normal variations of pasta, curry, chili, casserole etc at home.

Inertia · 03/12/2019 01:08

Well, thanks to this thread I've discovered that skirlie is a thing.

VestaTilley · 03/12/2019 13:36

My Nana always stopped them for 3 weeks or so before Christmas, and I tend to do so too.

Notsure1978 · 03/12/2019 13:45

We rarely have a roast dinner now due to the adverse effects on DP digestive system Blush we all get to smell it for days afterwards.
Made one on Sunday and my goodness it was delicious, it was devoured, you’d think no one in the house had eaten for ages. I am tempted to do another but will hold out until Xmas, because it did seem that not having one for ages made it extra special
