To be crapping it about quitting my job?

Is it just me or does quitting your job make anyone else stomach-churningly anxious 😭 I'm worried my boss will try and talk me out of it and get nasty with me. I haven't slept properly for months thinking about it! I'm quite senior, I think they're going to be absolutely hopping. I've only quit a proper job once before. Anyone have any good tips for me??

Agree with @waffles80, do it face to face then follow up with a letter. In most organisations it's pretty unprofessional just to send a letter.

It’s just a job. You’ll be forgotten within days of leaving. Do you think that you or anybody else will care in 6 months / 5 years / 30 years?

It's not that straightforward unfortunately, I wish it were. There are knock on effects when long standing staff members leave. They also don't let you tell anyone either until the day before you actually go.

How is that enforced?

Namestranger · 24/11/2019 21:52

It's just like a fairly standard thing where I work and other companies like it. Obviously some people do go against it but most don't, I don't think anyone explicitly says what will happen if you don't but I suppose most people just want a quiet life.

I just realized how mad what I wrote sounds; obviously they do tell your immediate colleagues a bit before everyone else but the "thanks for playing" email as we call it only goes out the day before you go.

Do you have to tell them if you're starting another job?

Biggobyboo · 24/11/2019 21:59

What kind of job do you do OP?

I can’t say that I’ve ever cared when I left a job.

I don't think so. Gardening leave is fairly standard practice so fingers crossed if I'm a bit vague about it it'll be a swift exit!

How did it go OP?

Namestranger · 26/11/2019 14:58

Thanks for checking in - it's Friday I'm doing it - will definitely be posting for a handhold - anxiety is off the scale! Sad

Well what are they going to do? Sack you?

Namestranger · 26/11/2019 17:29

I know, I know... I just get really bad anxiety about this sort of thing Sad I know in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal.

I won't bore you with the details but I've been sort of conditioned to be a homebody...don't go travelling, don't take risks, don't do anything unexpected, always make sure you're working as hard as possible and stay in a 'good job' when you've got it etc. etc. When I told DF how unhappy I've been at work and how I wanted to do a bit of a break/travelling (only 3 months, not loads!) he sort of rolled his eyes in an 'alright for some' kind of way and suggested I work for another ten years and then see how I feel. TEN FUCKING YEARS.

Thanks for the handhold guys...I sent an email in the end because manager's office is glass and faces all my colleagues in the open plan office. He's calling me in for a meeting today but I'll stand firm Smile feel like a huge knot in my chest has been undone!
