drinks taste nicer in posh glasses?

I am moving away from the likes of plastic beakers, bottles and chunky thick glasswear (like soda glasses) now my DC are older and it’s less likely to get broken and ruined (ps I recycle them or use them for something else not throw away)

So I bought 4 really nice, thin tall high ball glasses from John Lewis and said to DC they were really for visiting guests (their friends included) as it has been embarrassing in the past to offer someone a cold drink from a Disney princess beaker, or a pink chipped thick soda glass. I don’t have anything else for visitors, it’s not like I get out special hand towels. 😂

I’ve gone to the cupboard tonight and they are all gone. We have had no guests. My Investigation showed they had been taken up to DC bedrooms and apparently my only ever attempt at having something nice for visitors is because all liquids taste nicer from the glasses.

This is actually true - but why? Why does the same water taste nicer in a thin glass than the plastic Spider-Man cup? I’ve been doing it all wrong

Wine in a mug ruins the pleasure...
I know what you are saying...

TheoriginalLEM · 23/11/2019 19:46

Not sure about posh glassware but it does matter yes. Gin has to be from a massive bowl, brandy from a brandy glass. I like coke and lemonade from a pressed glass tall tumbler from Ikea. Wine from a tumbler? No thankyou.

I have no idea why this is though

Goawayquickly · 23/11/2019 19:48

Coke tastes better from a glass bottle for sure.
Drinks from plastic beakers, ugh... I remember being young and being given drinks from these at friends houses and feeling the bite marks in the beaker from the kids who owned them, all scratchy.

Tea is best from a thick white mug. I can’t be doing with delicate china for hot drinks.

NameChangedNoImagination · 23/11/2019 19:48

Of course!!!

justthecat · 23/11/2019 19:48

The right glass makes a big difference, and a chipped cup would put me off a nice cup of tea. It’s the little things that make a difference

slippyfeet · 23/11/2019 19:51

I think it shouldn't matter, but it does.

We've got a cupboard full of crappy Ikea glasses but I've got one nice proper (Dartington) white wine glass left from a set that has been decimated by DH and his big ham hands when washing up that I always use and it does taste nicer out of it.

Maybe it's just in my head though. DH gets the crappy glasses and still thinks the wine tastes nice so who knows!

moobar · 23/11/2019 19:52

I'm a little weird in that if we don't have guests I like an ice cold glass of wine in a plastic idea cup. A kids one. It reminds me of summer picnics and the beach.

My sister in law likes a nice glass but bought me plastic idea cups for her house so I feel at home!

moobar · 23/11/2019 19:52

Ikea

I remember this so vividly, I couldn't bear to put them to my lips.

G&T in a Spanish glass with ice, fruit etc - makes it into an experience not just a drink.
Wine in a stemmed glass.
Tea in a cup or mug but has to be thin China.
Coffee in a chunky mug.

CSIblonde · 23/11/2019 20:05

My huge pound shop wine glasses with teal blue stain around base & stem are exact rip offs of the hugely expensive John Lewis ones I saw for approx £15 each, so yes it makes it taste nicer.

bellajay · 23/11/2019 20:07

I quite enjoy drinking ‘normal’ drinks out of fancy glasses eg Coke in a brandy snifter or milk in a champagne flute. Feels fun 😂

lilgreen · 23/11/2019 20:07

Totally.Went to the theatre this week, ordered a glass of Merlot and they put it in a plastic cupHmm I asked for a glass or a refund!!

Pinot4me · 23/11/2019 20:10

A ridiculous theory but one I completely agree with! 🥂

RandomMess · 23/11/2019 20:11

My coffee tastes much nicer out of bone China.

Red wine thick glass, white super fine glass 🙈

Cola has to be out of one of our cola glasses!!

mumwon · 23/11/2019 20:14

& tea tastes nicer brewed in a china teapot & poured into a pretty china cup with match saucer (preferably with a matching tea plate & a biscuit - scowls at big mug on table)

Havaina · 23/11/2019 20:17

Agree on glasses.

The revelation for me was cooking in cast iron pots as opposed to steel or non-stick. Game changer, food tastes so much better.

AlexaAmbidextra · 23/11/2019 20:18

Agree about glasses. I bought some lovely balloon glasses for my gin. It tastes divine.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 23/11/2019 20:22

Love good glassware. Dartington is my favorite but it is expensive and DH is not the most careful. We tend to just have finer range supermarket glasses but always stemmed glasses for wine, balloon glasses for gin.

Always good mugs, I am incredibly fussy about mugs. Have different ones for tea and coffee and DH knows to stay well clear of my mugs.

Gustavo1 · 23/11/2019 20:22

It’s a fact! I agree wholeheartedly. A drink in it’s appropriate glass tastes so much better. Champagne from a flute, wine from a stemmed glass and cocktails in the tight shaped glass too ... my glasses cupboards are a bit heavily stocked Grin

FrangipaniBlue · 23/11/2019 20:29

Boils my piss when I get served gin in a high ball or worse still, a half glass.

I WANT A BALLOON GLASS!!!!

Reallynowdear · 23/11/2019 20:34

Absolutely, my adult sons definitely appreciate drinking their banana milk, as well as their beer, from Villeroy & Boch Boston glassware.

Apparently, the 'bumps' in the glass make them easier to grip.

Harry, my eldest, has requested the high balls as a moving in gift when he buys his first home.

He is 21. I am not impressed.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 23/11/2019 20:39

This is so true. Don't get me started on drinking tea out of a black mug.
When i was pregnant i would drink lemonade from a champagne flute when I wanted a treat haha

justthecat · 23/11/2019 21:11

Would never buy coloured glass to drink of

AgeLikeWine · 23/11/2019 21:20

Of course it makes a difference. We have cheapo ikea glasses for everyday use, because it doesn’t matter if they get broken. When we have a decent bottle of wine to enjoy, out come the Reidels.

BrassicaBabe · 23/11/2019 21:41

I don't understand the new/ish trend for gin in a balloon glass. Yes it has botanicals etc but it isn't the same as wine by any stretch. And it bugs me when the ice hits my nose. Much prefer a hi ball.
