To think this is chicken pox again?

DS2 has had chicken pox confirmed twice; once at 10 months and again at 21 months. Today be has come up in a very chicken poxy looking rash, mostly on his bum and chest. He also has one spot on his tongue and a few dotted in other places. But surely it can’t be chicken pox for a third time?? I know we’re not medically trained but I’m driving myself bonkers googling immune deficiencies and desperately need some sanity thrown my way.

I would say yes it is.

Sympathies, my dd has had it twice too.

dementedpixie · 23/11/2019 18:24

Hand foot and mouth can present in the nappy area too

Certainly looks like it. I've had it 4 times so it is possible. Thankfully it now looks like I'm finally immune. My DC have all had it and I work in a nursery and haven't had it in over 30 years since I was 10.

Oh crap. Thanks all.

I did think HFM at first but ironically the only places he doesn’t have spots is... hands, feet and around his mouth 😂

I know several children who had it under the age of one so didn’t develop the required immunity for it and got it again. Three times seems most unfortunate though. HFM can be very similar as can some random post viral rashes. Give it a couple of days and see if the spots are blisters.

Yes it could be , all my brothers had it 3 times and a female cousin also , myself and my sister just once

There are multiple strains of chicken pox, and although some confer immunity to others, there will be some strains you aren't immune to still.

This could happen a number of times in theory, though it's not that likely you'd get all the different types which don't protect against each other.

Various nutrient deficiencies (even if subclinical) may make infections more likely/worse (e.g. A, C, and D particularly may be relevant in the case of chickenpox), so it might be worth keeping a record of their intake (e.g. via the Cronometer website) for a while.

It definitely looks like chickenpox.

Once he’s recovered from this bout, I would recommend you go to your GP and ask for a comprehensive blood test, checking his vitamin levels and his white blood cell count.

HopeSimpson · 24/11/2019 01:35

It’s not quite the same, but on Embarrassing Bodies several years ago, there was a girl with awful veruccas on both feet that just wouldn’t go away.

Dr Christian sent her for a blood test and it turned out she had no white blood cells at all. He couldn’t believe she’d got to the age she was staying so healthy.

My son had chickenpox 6 times. Each confirmed by g.p.

Floopyandtired · 24/11/2019 08:32

Thanks all - lots more spots this morning so definitely CP. I will be making GP appointment as soon as everything has scabbed over. I remember the embarrassing bodies episode with that little girl, I believe she had a bone marrow transplant in the end? It makes me sick just thinking about it, that poor family.
