To think that working Christmas 'for show' is ridiculous?

I work in retail, but the division of the company that I work in shuts down over Christmas meaning that there is no work to be completed and you have to essentially make up things to do. Despite this, I've been told I have to come in 'for show' on the 24th and 27th - not sure for who, because, of course, all the directors and managers will be off all of Christmas! AIBU to complain about this?

For the benefit of the unfortunate bastards who are working Christmas Eve until late to get ready for the 27th and aren't allowed to take any time off at all?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 23/11/2019 14:43

YABVU 24th and 27th of December are normal working days.

Spare a thought for the emergency services providing care 24/7.

MsRomanoff · 23/11/2019 14:44

Actually, I can understand this.

Theres a huge problem between retail staff in store and their office counter parts.

I worked at Asda head office. Bank holidays were off, you were expected in the other days unless you booked AL

MsRomanoff · 23/11/2019 14:45

Sorry the huge problem being that head office staff get lots of perks including bank holidays off. Litany of resentment.

All the days are normal days.

PurpleDaisies · 23/11/2019 14:45

That’s not working Christmas!

FOJeremy · 23/11/2019 14:45

Office workers always have it easier.

TheRealShatParp · 23/11/2019 14:46

Are you allowed to book annual leave on those dates?

ohwheniknow · 23/11/2019 14:46

What do you normally do? What tasks will you do instead?

Pipandmum · 23/11/2019 14:47

Are you getting paid? Then you go to work. Otherwise book it as holiday (too late I guess).

DontTouchTheMoustache · 23/11/2019 14:48

Complain about what though? Attending your job and not being given extra annual leave for free?

Lolwhat · 23/11/2019 14:49

They’re normal working days, my partner has to work Christmas Eve, and Boxing Day and growing up my Nan was often on call on Christmas Day. My dad also has to work Christmas Day.

Ragwort · 23/11/2019 14:50

I work in retail and head office staff are asked to help out in the shops during the Christmas period, sadly few actually do. There are often support roles that need to be filled during Christmas, you might think it’s not important but if the IT systems break down, for example, the shop staff will need to know who to call.

I used to work in a retail Head Office & my department made sure we always provided cover during the shop opening hours, frequently I was the only person in the building (years before such a thing as ‘lone working policy’).

Hahaha88 · 23/11/2019 14:53

I think we need more info. Is it a shop you work in and if so is it open those days? Or do you work in an office?

Biancadelrioisback · 23/11/2019 14:53

Is this the first year youve had to do it?

Oysterbabe · 23/11/2019 14:55

Yabu. They are normal working days.

BritWifeinUSA · 23/11/2019 14:55

My mother’s a midwife. For the past 35 years she’d have been delighted to be told she only had to work the 24th and 27th. Instead they have to work either Christmas Day or Boxing Day each year (they alternate) unless they book annual leave.

Should have booked annual leave if you need more than 2 bank holidays off plus the weekend either end of Christmas week.

Here in the US only Christmas Day is a holiday. December 26 is a normal working day.

SilverySurfer · 23/11/2019 14:55

Are you allowed to book those two days as annual leave? If so, problem solved.

Pinkypurple35 · 23/11/2019 14:56

24th & 27th are normal working days! This is completely the norm everywhere I’ve ever worked. Just take some mince pies & chocs into work and enjoy an easy day!

Biggobyboo · 23/11/2019 14:57

Do you have a bullshit job OP?

What’s the point of being at work unless you are needed?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 23/11/2019 14:57

Working 24th and 27th isn’t “working Christmas”.

Serenity45 · 23/11/2019 14:57

Totally off topic but did anyone else read 'for show' as 'fo sho' in their heads? Or have I been watching too much Power? Grin

Cookit · 23/11/2019 14:59

What is if you want to do, use your annual leave?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/11/2019 15:01

If there's nothing to do it seems silly to me.

I work in an office dealing with retailers and we finish on the 20th and are off until the 2nd of Jan. We can take it out of our annual leave or have it unpaid but there is so little work to do that it isn't necessary for us to be in.

Biggobyboo · 23/11/2019 15:01

To be fair, if I worked in a retail head office, I wouldn’t volunteer to work on the shop floor over Christmas. The general public are awful.

NameChangeNugget · 23/11/2019 15:01

YABVU. That’s not working Christmas.

Get another job, rather than bang on about absolutely nothing
