Stuck at Barcelona airport

NC for this as this is outing and don't want linked to previous posts, also posting here for traffic.
Been in Barcelona for a short break, reach the airport this evening to fly home. Went for food and my passport accidentally got thrown out with the rubbish by the time we realised it had long gone.
Now I'm stuck at the airport, I was airside but due to strikes I managed to just walk out.
No hotel will take me without any photo I.D.
Have phoned the consulate and they say I have to apply for emergency travel docs which take 2 working days.
How on earth am I meant to stay at the airport until Tuesday until I can get a flight, any suggestions please

If you have lost your passport, the UK Embassy/Consulate may not be open for appointments until Monday ( weekend now)

brokenbarca · 23/11/2019 08:53

Ok now have a police report, I have booked a hotel for three nights and am hoping the police report will be enough to get checked in. I need to sleep once I've done that I'll be more equipped to deal with this.
Stupidly for the 1st time I completely over looked travel insurance.
Emergency passport takes two working days so I'm looking at Tuesday as the earliest I can get home

I have no advice for you but just wanted to say that I am impressed at how calm you appear to be about your predicament!

brokenbarca · 23/11/2019 09:18

@Apolloanddaphne, I'm far from calm deep down, I'm so unbelievably tired. But I need to be practical atm and make sure I'm doing everything I can to get into a hotel.
I know the steps I need to take to get home and that as it's the weekend it will take time.
I just want to get home and never leave my house again

Good luck
People don't realise the value of a passport until something goes wrong
Hope you make it back to UK !

NormaBean · 23/11/2019 12:45

Hope you manage to get checked in ok, OP.

Wintersnowdrop · 23/11/2019 12:59

Aw, thinking of you. Sorry your travel companion has gone home though.

brokenbarca · 23/11/2019 13:28

I have just checked into a hotel had the most amazing bath ever and now need to sleep before I even think of the next stage of getting back to England.
I managed to get a photocopy of my passport from the hotel we stayed at which helps as even with police report hotels won't check you in without passport number

Aw glad you have managed to check in to a hotel okay 👍

brokenbarca · 24/11/2019 14:43

Just to update you all my emergency passport had been approved, I can pick it up tomorrow and my flight is booked. Have never been so relieved to be returning to cold wet England

Aw happy for you.

bottlenose301 · 24/11/2019 15:45

About 4-5 years ago I also lost my passport in Barcelona. I had to go to the embassy on Monday morning, buy a same day emergency passport and was able to fly home that night.

brokenbarca · 24/11/2019 15:52

@bottlenose301 I guess it's changed now as it's all done on line and you can't go to get it until they have confirmed it's ready. It normally also takes 2 working days but I found out yesterday the consulate in Madrid was working today hence why I can get it tomorrow rather than Tuesday/Wednesday

I would have expected the airport to be more helpful in terms of finding the passport in the first place. How far could a bag of rubbish have actually gone? Surely it would have just gone to an bin outside?

Anyway I'm glad you are sorted and getting home soon

brokenbarca · 24/11/2019 18:18

@changeforprivacy you would think wouldn't you, the police and passport control were not interested, they couldn't have been less helpful if they tried.
It was from advice on here and finding out for myself what I had to do, they literally just shrugged their shoulders.
I was told the bin had been emptied and nope they wouldn't look any further.

OP I'm glad you managed to get checked into a hotel in the end, I had forgotten about the need for the passport number in addition to the denuncia but I have my passport number saved on my online airline accounts so I can check in via my phone/app.

How far could a bag of rubbish have actually gone? Surely it would have just gone to an bin outside?

Depends if its somewhere they can actually access though. They should have explained better but if their English wasnt great and the OPs Catalan/Spanish wasnt great then they may have decided it wasnt worth trying to make themselves understood that they couldn't do anything.

I work in a supermarket and once bin bags leave the shop floor they get put into a giant compacting machine in our warehouse yard. Once a bag has gone into the compactor there is no way to get it out again, and even if you could get it out it is compacted as soon as it enters the machine so would be useless. I would imagine that an airport would have a similar system considering the volume of rubbish that is generated in an average day at even just one airport outlet.

brokenbarca · 24/11/2019 19:37

@melj1213 I appreciate the help and advice you gave me, it was a huge help. The police woman at the airport who done the report was lovely, could probably see I was close to a breakdown by that point.
I also have my passport number stored from booking flights but could not find it. The hotel I had stayed at still had a copy and printed it off for me.
I did think that about the rubbish that once the bin is emptied at an airport that size it would get compacted. My frustration was with the original police and passport control who were quite happy just to let me wander round the airport with no passport and no help, and to just stroll on out with no custom checks

After reading this thread I have got my passport out and taken a couple of photos of it to store on my phone, just in case.
