To not want to be stranded in London!

Booked a short break in the New Year. Leeds to London. Everything pre paid including outbound train tickets. Today they released the journey home. Well due to engineering works there's warnings saying how busy it will be, lots of diversions and extortionate costs as well as double journey time!!
Can any of you wise and knowledgeable London people advise on what the hell to do? Travel insurance won't cover it, we can't amend the hotel so we either pay hundreds for a nightmare train journey or don't go and lose hundreds we've paid for hotel. Help!!!

What about an earlier train? I got the 7am from Liverpool to London on may bank holiday once because they was going to be delays. The works don’t start later in the day usually.

Try the St. Pancras line to Chesterfield or Sheffield and then change for Leeds.

Megabus 4 Jan. Less than a tenner.

Well there are trains if you look on journey planner, changing at Derby. And you can book seats. I would just book a seat right now.

ForalltheSaints · 22/11/2019 20:32

I'd look at the options from St Pancras to Sheffield and a local train from there.

titnomatani · 22/11/2019 20:42

Megabus? Fares from £1 to wherever you're headed. It doesn't have to be a big deal OP

I'm a bit lost. Am I right in thinking:

You have booked hotel
You have booked train there

Now you want to book train back and it is costing you 'hundreds' and will take ages? What's the price and what is the journey length?

AJPTaylor · 22/11/2019 20:54

But it isn't though! Train tickets 18 quid for a single Hmm

35 quid advance now!

I just looked on the Trainline and there are trains, it looks fine. I saw trains for £35 single but someone upthread found one cheaper.

Itsjustmee · 22/11/2019 21:39

Mega bus have coaches on the 4th Jan
The 11am bus from London Victoria to Leeds is £13 - for both of you and it arrives at 3.25pm
You can reserve the upper deck seats which are really comfortable
Unlike the the train where even when you have booked a seat it’s not guaranteed .

Ibelieveinwitches · 22/11/2019 22:52

The trains I was looking at were well over £100. Its sorted now. I've booked to come home on a later train that night. Its direct ro will take over 3.5 hrs but better than driving in a hire car.
Thanks everyone!!
