My weight won't go down. I know this seems like a minor issue, but it's massively getting to me - and more importantly, it's affecting my bipolar medication, as I can't take standard meds.

I weighed 65kg two years ago. I had to leave an abusive ex and ended up sleeping at work for quite a while. To get away with it, I volunteered to "host" a lot of the events in the evenings, which meant I was having canapes and wine every night... and gained weight. I was 83kg at the start of the year.

This year I've tried a custom diet plan, Orlistat, Team RH and calorie counting to 1,200 calories a day. I seem to really slowly lose weight, and then it spikes up again. This week, for example - I was down to 84.05kg - and then yesterday spiked up to 85.5. Today I'm 85.4kg. No meal changes, no exercise changes, I do the same every day. Every week is the same. I can't work out why. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it...

I'm under investigation for endometriosis, but I can't have the laparoscopy until I've lost some weight. I've had a cystoscopy and two ultrasounds which were fine. My bipolar meds aren't really working. I'm probably on the limit of the pill working. I get married in six months and I'm so miserable...

How would you want someone to help you?

It sounds rubbish, I'm sorry. I'm the same, I lose weight and then it creeps back up to where it was. It sounds like you've had a rough couple of years, and in times like that you're not going to be able to be as disciplined as you need to be to lose weight. Don't beat yourself up about it. Try low carb, cutting out starches and sugars.

BlueLips · 22/11/2019 12:41

Exercise. Seriously, download the coach to 5k app and get running. Well walking, then jogging, then running. Do it bit by bit, try to get out three times a week, go to Parkrun.

It’s a game changer. You’ll tone up, you’ll improve your health, and it will help a little with creating a calorie deficit. And you’ll get the endorphins to lift your mood. Starting running has changed my life, give it a go.

It's actually really simple to lose weight, IF you have the willpower and are physically able to exercise.

If you cut down on eating without exercising your body will go into a mode where it burns less and less calories in case you don't have any food for a while, it's protecting itself as it thinks food is scarce. Then when you eat "normally" it stores that extra food as fat/weight for when you need it again.

The key to get around this is exercise. And you don't even need to do that much, half an hour of exercise per day should easily achieve what you want if you're eating healthily. Just really push yourself during that half hour.

There is loads of information around the Web if you have a look. But just remember for sustainable weight loss, you don't want to be starving yourself, you want to be eating normal amounts of healthy food and exercising at least 4 times a week. Oh, and if you still drink, stop.

Good luck, it will come off.

Do any of your meds cause weight gain? Worth reading the information sheet

Waveysnail · 22/11/2019 12:50

When I did sw I found I gained a week every month then would come off again. I found daily weighing depressing and moved just measuring with tape measure

dontalltalkatonce · 22/11/2019 12:50

It might be your medications. Lots of them cause weight gain.

PlinkPlink · 22/11/2019 12:50

If you keep doing the same exercise at the same intensity that loses its effectiveness after a while.

I can't remember the reasoning for it now but you should change things up every now and then, particularly when you plateau. Your body gets used to doing the same exercises. When you throw something new in, it really gets it working.

Also, how much water are you consuming? Water is essential to weight loss.

Sunshinesusie23 · 22/11/2019 12:55

I disagree with some of the pp. Exercise will aid weight loss but if you really want to see results you have to change your diet. Weight loss is a huge percentage what you eat and only a tiny percentage exercise. Diets vary depending on the individual but a few years ago I lost 2 stone in 3 months doing slimming world. It's not for everyone but it worked really well for me as I could still eat a lot of the things I enjoyed, I just had to make slight adjustments.

Also cut back on booze. Wine and beer are so high in calories.

Ohyesiam · 22/11/2019 12:59

Download the app Happy Scale, which fires some clever and accurate maths to cut out the weight spikes, and just give you the trend. So no feeling horribly sidelined by the discovery of gaining a kilo when you’ve Ben doing everything right.
Apart from that I sympathise with you, but I over eat, unless I’m dieting.

Mlou32 · 22/11/2019 13:13

Who would you want to help you? I'm not sure what help someone can give you that you can't give yourself.

Perhaps you should keep a diary and write down every single thing you eat. Everything. Even post it up here and we can give you some tips on where you may be going wrong.

Half an hours exercise a day helps so much. Walk to work. Go for a walk on your lunch break. Walk home. Or just go for a walk in the evening.

Slimming world is amazing. You get everything laid out for you with a book and you have a consultant to talk to with anything you don't understand or if you need advice.

Good luck.

BlueLips · 22/11/2019 13:24

I agree Sunshinesusie for weight loss you need to address what you eat, but the OP says she’s eating 1200 calories a day, so what she needs is exercise.

SafetyAdvice0FeedWhenAgitated · 22/11/2019 13:29

It can be a water. Depending on my cycle I used to differ nearly 4kg up and down within it.

Have you tried to measuring yourself instead? It was much better for me.

BeeN77 · 22/11/2019 13:42

A suggestion might be to not weigh yourself everyday. Your "daily" weight can change based on a variety of factors (retaining more water, pre-period, increases in muscle mass etc). In the past, when I was on an eating plan to lose weight, I found that this was one of my bigger triggers to "falling on the wagon." Whereas now, if I'm watching what I eat and exercising more, I only weigh myself once a week and take into account that there are other factors that could show no lose or a small increase.

Also, if you are exercising and your muscles are getting stronger, their muscle mass will weigh more than fat. So you may still be losing "weight," but the numbers don't reflect that. Have you taken your body measurements. I found that this is a more accurate representation of how your body is changing, than numbers on a scale.

onthecoins · 22/11/2019 14:53

Are you sure you are accurately and thoroughly logging all calories you eat, including drinks?

I'm also one who cannot lose weight unless I stay under 1000 a day and cut out bread and pasta.

Choclips · 22/11/2019 14:58

I've put on over a stone since July. I had a hysterectomy and I'm pretty sure I'm in the change. I have huge ,tender boobs from water retention. I have hrt that is supposed to help but no one else is going to help me I've just realised but myself.

I used to walk 30 mins a day and don't now, slimming world just stopped working for me- or so it seems and yes it feels like s bloody mystery.

But this week I've had to take stock and try a different approach. As others have said, coach to 5k is accessible for starting from scratch. I've only done 3 so far but I feel so much better already.

How old are you o.p? I've realised for me, I'll have to come off the sugar as I'd be at it all day. I'm going to have one treat a week as weight would not budge . Sad but true!

Start somewhere as anythings better than nothing and good luck!

keo8260 · 22/11/2019 15:12

What bi polar medication are you on as some do cause problems with the thyroid which can make it difficult to loose weight.
