AIBU to ask if I ship from US Target/Walmart to the UK, could you ship from Next/M&S in return?

I’m a Brit living in the US, Las Vegas. I’ve been here 25 years, I don’t get back home much and I really miss certain things. I have a family, and long for M & S style cotton button up PJs for children (illegal in US, has to be skin tight if cotton, other only polyester button up PJs are available and the static is shocking!) and other UK things for Kids and Adults. Also, I’d love chocolate, Boden clothes stuff, Next, Sainsburys, and anything else I’m struggling to get or finding really expensive to buy here in the US.

In return, I could get US things to ship to the UK. I live nr Walmart, Target, I’m a Costco and Sams club member (Men’s Levi’s, Lucky jeans $29 or less, I know this as I buy for my husband and oldest son) and I’m near a massive mall. I’m also nr Las Vegas Outlets which has every brand imaginable.

Could this work? How would it do this? I’ve done some BST on FB, say to ship/swap sizes on an item, and both of us PayPal the money to one another to give some protection. If that makes sense. Any takers/suggestions please?

Next and M&S both ship internationally. I think I would rather that than rely on strangers. No offence mumsnetters.

I have bought from Next in the past, it was very straightforward. And Boots before they fucking went to Walgreens. I also buy from John Lewis regularly. The world is very very small now and often these retailers offer free international shipping. I think try the retailer before arsing about with PayPal etc. We used to do that in the noughties it is a massive ballache

Out of interest - why are the M and S style cotton PJ's illegal in the US? Sounds bonkers

SeaToSki · 22/11/2019 06:39

Get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees (Chas have one) and just shop in the UK shops you like, almost all of them will ship internationally and its not a huge shipping charge (unless you buy rslly big stuff). Boden have a US site. Amazon.co.uk ship to the US and lots of British food is available on Amazon.com.

stucknoue · 22/11/2019 06:47

@SquatBetty

They are convinced that kids will set fire to their pj's, though in reality it's become just a style thing because few city dwellers have open fires. You don't get the kind of pj's the op describes in the U.K. that much for kids these days either.

Most companies do ship overseas and tbh there is nothing on sale in the USA that's worth the cost of international shipping, we actually can buy cheap and nasty clothes like those sold in target cheaper here, in fact the only thing I bring in is melatonin because we can't get it here without a prescription

Poppyisa · 22/11/2019 07:16

Exactly what Stuck says, the PJ thing is a fear of open flames. I don’t like the skin tight long-John style PJs in the US, trying to get a damp freshly bathed kid into a pair, requires Houdini like skills.

Thanks for the shipping and CC tips; I’ll take a look.

Shipping form the US can be hideously expensive, import duty on top of shipping costs. Our daughter left a teddy bear in New York, as well as ludicrously high shipping costs from the hotel they were also charked import duty on what was clearly not a new item!
Interesting about the pj's , never knew that, yet they can have a gun, no health and safety issues there!

treepolitics · 22/11/2019 20:53

Boden has a US website @Poppyisa I used to buy lots from them when we lived in the US. I do miss target but the import duties are the problem - lovely friend sent me a handmade quilt and she declared the materials as worth $200 (I’m sure that’s right) and they charged £34 duty on it!

So I’d be wary of trying to get someone to help as if you muck up the mailing you will get stung for import tax!

Come to think of it, boden hasn’t had button down pjs for ages, I checked M&S and you’re right, only one pair of grey pjs with buttons - the world has gone mad!!

Plenty of UK mail forwarding services. I've used UK Postbox many times myself.

glueandstick · 22/11/2019 20:57

Get someone in the U.K. to order M&S for you. I’m sure I paid about £8 shipping to Aus. Brilliant in my mind.

ArfArfBarf · 22/11/2019 21:02

You used to (as in a couple of years ago) be able to get Boden in Nordstrom too. It was very popular amongst the wealthy families where we lived and I would snap it up “nearly new” at the consignment store.

dreichwinter · 22/11/2019 21:14

M&S and Next both ship very quickly and cheaply to the USA.
I get all the dc's uniforms from there and have had a next delivery only last week.

I think Boden does as well but I haven't used it. John Lewis also delivers internationally.

BritInUS1 · 22/11/2019 21:19

I order from Next and M&S and the shipping to the US is pretty good - certainly cheaper than using any postal service
