Labour raising minimum wage

curlytoenails · 21/11/2019 23:28

Have listened to the debates by each party and one that sticks out to me is raising the minimum wage to £10

I absolutely agree that the minimum wage is ridiculous - I agree it should be raised

What I do have a problem with is that as an NHS employee - my wage isn't raised in line with the minimum - probably not explaining myself well but when I've studied at uni, had an attractive (at the time) salary and now raising the minimum wage is nearly what I earn?

I'm all for labour raising the MW - I agree. Recognise that whilst doing that you need to raise wages proportionally

They have committed to 5% pay rise for publuc sector.

Butterisbest · 21/11/2019 23:36

Yes it's a great idea and the MW should definitely be raised. It's very easy to promise the world when you're not in power and there is an election on the horizon. Mr Corbyn should also be able to do simple mathematics and work out how a Labour Government would be able to deliver all these promises. His proposed tax increases won't pay for everything he is promising.

Heartwarming to see just how much spare money is just lying around, easy pickings. Billions waiting to be grabbed from somewhere no bother and spent tomorrow.

On a totally unrelated note DS and I had a heated discussion the other night on how we would spend our Euromillions win, that we didn't win.

@TowelNumber42 here is a link to Labour's 44-page "grey book" setting out the costings for their manifesto.

@goodwinter ♥️♥️♥️

OP yes YABU. From what you’ve said you clearly do have a problem with unskilled workers earning a decent living. NHS workers should have a pay increase too, but min wage employees aren’t the enemy here, billionaires/the top 5%/huge multinational tax dodging corporations are.

TowelNumber42 · 22/11/2019 00:10

@goodwinter Thanks. I was in need of a laugh.

Lies help no one. Pretending money is there when it isn't helps no one. Same for Brexit pretence. The make-believe from all parties in this election is even more ridiculous than normal. For the first time ever I don't know who to vote for. They've all gone bonkers.

Pomley · 22/11/2019 00:16

I agree with you OP. If you could get a less demanding job for similar pay, why wouldn't you? Unless the package for jobs such as yours is made significantly more attractive, then it will exasperate the shortage. Some jobs across all payscales are hard work, but let's be honest, not all carry the same stresses and demands. If minimum wage rises the cost of living will also rise, so all that has really happened is there's a shortage somewhere in the middle which can't be filled as people cascade down. Why not either try to make living costs more affordable, or increase the level of support lower earners recieve?

HeIenaDove · 22/11/2019 00:19

This thread will go the same way as a previous one on minimum wage. The ones who need a group they can feel superior to will come on and say. "why should i do my job when i can do a supermarket job for nearly the same" Because there is also the assumption that minimum wage jobs are easier with no or little stress. Im willing to bet theyd never follow through on that though.

pigsDOfly · 22/11/2019 00:45

I wouldn't get too excited/cross about what Labour are going to do when they're in government OP.

There will never be enough cash sloshing around loose in our economy to finance their 'magic money' spending spree: and they've got to win the election first. Can't see that happening either.

PurpleFrames · 22/11/2019 00:57

I work through and agency that pays me minimum, I happened to find out however they get contracted the living wage to pay me. This is the sort of thing that should also be looked at. £2.50/hour difference is a lot when PT

Walkingdeadfangirl · 22/11/2019 01:05

Unfortunately it will mean everyone under 21 will be let go and unemployment will skyrocket.

You cant just fling figures around without consequences.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 22/11/2019 01:09

Are they going to force companies to extend their labour budgets or just continue to force managers to make the same figures go further?

Same staff and less hours because HO never allows more money to be spent. Just putting more pressure on the people lower down the ladder.

Hisdoeherbuck · 22/11/2019 01:33

Raising the minimum wage is pointless. All wages will have to go up proportionately. Therefore cost of goods will go up proportionately. Everyone will still be in the same position, rich will be rich, poor will be poor. Just with more money, pointless.

Thehop · 22/11/2019 08:00

I’m 40. Have masses of industry relieve experience and qualifications and am on NMW (early years)

But......a raise in MW will close the private nursery I work for and I’ll be out of a job.

It’s not quite as simple as it sounds

tillytrotter1 · 22/11/2019 20:39

When are they putting Peppa Pig on the moon? They can all promise anything but these things have to be paid for, prices will increase, wiping out any gain.
