Hello there, I’m in the process of moving to Aberdeen. My 3 year old son has a medical condition for which I would require speech , physio therapy. How’s the paeds medical care there? I’m looking for help with finding a good area to live in plus good schools- my daughter is 5 and is going to reception. What’s Aberdeen like? I’m moving from london for my husband’s job! Thanks so much !

have a look at Cove Bay in Aberdeen. Its got very good transport links to the city centre and has a primary there, and a secondary 5 minutes drive away. the royal aberdeen children's hospital is a 15 minute drive away x

Where is your husband going to be based?

MHACCESSORIES · 30/11/2019 15:29

Thank you so much. My husband s work is in AB10. Carden place. Contemplating living in the Westend vs Banchory. Any ideas on Ashley Road School & Banchory Primary School.

Both Ashley Road and Banchory are good with good local secondaries too. Also check out Mile End, Cults and Milltimber primary.

Personally I would choose the west end over Banchory for convenience if your little boy needs ongoing medical care. It would save the jaunt in from Banchory which is roughly 18 miles from Aberdeen. Mile End primary is a good school too.

West End, Queen's Cross out to Milltimber is traditionally the 'posher' end of the city. Lots of lovely Victorian stone houses of all sizes. Easy access to the Foresterhill hospitals (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, children's and maternity hospitals) via Anderson Drive, the original ring road. Easy access to the city centre too.

I live south of Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Laurencekirk has great schools and I’m from Banchory originally which also has great schools both are about 20/30 drive into town. The children’s hospital is relatively new and is fantastic. Hope you enjoy your new city.

@millymoo1202 I lived in Aberdeen for many years and at some point I traveled in Stonehaven quite often for work... walks on the beach on my lunch break! I loved it! What a beautiful place to live in!❤️

I’m a city person so definitely leaning towards the west end. What kind of houses / flats are out there for rent? I was looking at Banchory more for space for the kids etc. A garden which is a real life saver!

I’m so anxious about the move. I fear it might be too different from London life. But I hear it’s absolutely beautiful so looking forward to that.

Ha! Ha! My DSs have attended both Ashley Road (til P2, P6) then Banchory Primary from P2, P6 onwards. One has just gone off to uni (Oxford no less) the other one is in S3 at Banchory Academy.

How do I private message you as I would prefer not to air laundry in an open forum?

MissMoiselle · 30/11/2019 18:04

Congrats on your move! Aberdeen is lovely, you'll love it. I second people's suggestions with Milltimber, Cults, West End. Cults has a great primary and secondary school. The University of Aberdeen area is also great, cobbled streets, lovely houses, lots of green spaces, etc. We used to live in Union Grove, which has a lovely quaint feel (treelined streets, little cafés and delis, small independent shops) to it and it's only a 5-10 min walk to the city centre. If you're more of a city person, I wouldn't recommend Banchory though, quite a drive to Aberdeen city itself. Hth

Here you go, OP. The Aberdeen Solicitors Property Centre. Choose Aberdeen City and detached houses and work with a city map. There's loads of solid inter-war stone bungalows in the west end that have big gardens and have been extended as well as older terraces of houses that look small but go back for ever. Much bigger rooms than the new builds, think Victorian to the 1950s. In Scotland, the buying process is much easier and mainly solicitors deal with property rather than estate agents. The city has pretty good bus routes too as well as out along Deeside.

Hi OP, I grew up on Carden Place! Then moved a few streets away, also West End/Queen's Cross kind of area. Absolutely loved being there, it was quite the change from a small village in the home counties (moved up age 10) - I walked to school (went to RGC in the city centre), and walked into town to go shopping, see friends etc, loved the freedom and flexibility of being central.

I had school friends that lived in Mannofield near Ashley Road, one on Forest Ave, one on Norfolk Rd and one on Gray St, their houses were lovely, so those are definitely areas to consider. It's also very nice along Fountainhall Road, Desswood Place and the streets parallel with it. Rubislaw Den N and S are commonly accepted as being the nicest streets to live in the city.

Salene · 02/12/2019 13:52

I would pick Banchory over city centre but then I prefer the quieter side of life, I lived in Aberdeen city for 15 years but now live out by Inverurie direction.

I think you really need to visit the schools to get a idea and the area, could you temporary rent for a couple of months till you find your bearings.?
