To think some employers do not understand part-time hours

New job advertised as part-time. Agreed in interview & subsequent emails that my hours would be 8am-2.30pm. Boss said that would be fine blah blah blah. 3 days into the job and at 2.30pm as I am leaving I get a call from boss asking if I can do x, y & z before leaving. I say sorry I have to leave to pick DC up. She says 'Oh, who will do x, y & z? I need them by tomorrow morning.' She had sent mentioned tasks at 2.15pm, 15 mins before my leaving time ffs! I said sorry I have to go & will look tomorrow morn Confused I've heard it so many times, friends working in supposedly part-time positions but expected or end up doing full-time hours. AIBU to think some employers don't understand part-time! Also WWYD in this situation? Hmm

Of course the understand it. They just don’t want to pay it!

user1487194234 · 21/11/2019 19:54

IME they understand it fine, just choose to ignore it
Apart from the full time work load for part time pay bit

HisBetterHalf · 21/11/2019 19:55

some think fulltime means day and night as well

Pomley · 21/11/2019 19:55

YANBU (unfortunately), I went part time but doing full days for this reason, as it was easier to iron out a reasonable workload than deal with enquiries just before finishing, or the annoying comments all of the time. I'm not sure what the solution is, they are aware but aren't arsed.

MT2017 · 21/11/2019 19:56

I think you've done well to say no - if you'd said yes you'd have opened yourself up to always being asked.

Yellredder · 21/11/2019 20:03

I would often come in on a Monday to find that there'd been an email sent on the previous Thursday asking for information to be forwarded by the Friday or Monday. I don't work Thursday/Friday. Also all training is organised for my days off, but lots of meetings for the days I do work, which then means I have less time to do my actual job than fulltimers do.

onthecoins · 21/11/2019 20:09

It's just employment in general. If you work FT 9-5 you get given an urgent piece of 3 hour work to do at 4.30.

Pomley · 21/11/2019 20:11

@onthecoins it is a lot more prevelant for part time workers, for obvious reasons. But yes, there's usually an element of expectation to work beyond regular hours in full time work; but usually as the exception rather than the rule.

TokyoSushi · 21/11/2019 20:12

My experience is definitely that it's usually a full time job, in shorter hours, for less money!

MaderiaCycle · 21/11/2019 20:22

Hold your line. The longer and tighter you hold it the more if the norm it will be for you to go on time and the easier it will be

Twickerhun · 21/11/2019 20:25

How long would x y and z take to do? I think some managers don’t really get part time hours and some really don’t understand how long tasks take to do.

Thatnovembernight · 21/11/2019 20:33

Yes. Although what irritates me most are colleagues that humph EVERY DAY ‘Must be nice to be part time’ when you leave. I have pointed out that they could ask for less hours but they want the full time wage. Also they don’t have kids. I’m leaving to pick them mine up from school, not to head to a spa.

Undies1990 · 21/11/2019 20:34

Stick to your guns and leave at your contracted time. Your boss probably didn't realise the time and/or forgot you leave at 2:30. If you continue to leave on time, they will get the message and adjust their way of working/thinking but it might take a few weeks.

If you stay on beyond your hours so early in your new role, you will be taken advantage of for years to come.

I work 9 to 3pm and always stick to those times, no matter what (unless there is some dire emergency of course!)

Be firm with leaving on time and you'll be fine.

Partytrain · 21/11/2019 20:43

Thanks everyone. I'll stick to my guns Halloween Grin

Oh I work part time in a job where people are expected to stay late as standard if things over run.
I am a single mum with two children to pick up from after school club before it closes and the comments I get are awful.

The thing is no one is obliged to stay, if anything it would be better if everyone went home on time because and then the managers would have to get more staff or realise they’re expecting too much of people in the time given.
But I’m always insulted behind my back for being and to my face for being lazy, having no work ethic, pulling the mum card, ‘wouldn’t it be lovely if we all had the option to get off on time’

I work 30 hours a week. I’m paid for 30 hours a week and I’ll work them. Everyone else at work is in a relationship with their children’s dad and have family near by, small team so I know this. I literally have no one to pick up the slack for me if I get off late.

One of my managers told me everyone is expected to stay if the day overruns and I told her that’s fine but after school club charge £15 for ever ten minutes I’m late and contact social services after 30 mins oh no collection.
I told her if she wants to pay that for me or go pick up my kids and watch them while I work then I’ll stay as late as she likes.

FleetwoodMacsDreams · 21/11/2019 20:48

I work 2.5 days a week and never ever ever leave on time on my half day. On the one 9am-5pm day I left at 4:50pm (having arrived at 8:30am and worked through my lunch break) my manager snarkily questioned that I was off, was I? I am now starting to reign in my extra unpaid hours as I don't feel like giving them an extra second of my time given they don't value it.

Partytrain · 21/11/2019 20:57

@Ditsythespider @Fleetwood awful employers. Same here, noone else to pick up kids from school. That's why I applied for a job in school hours. Horrible so many bosses do not value employees. Will continue as @Undies1990 suggested.

Half the time they forget that part timers have a life outwith the job hours and think you could just stay in for a bit it’s only 3pm after all....! They have no clue that people have responsibilities that can’t be changed to suit some fanny boss that’s forgotten that x y and z tasks should have been emailed to you earlier if they were to be prioritised.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 21/11/2019 21:44

Keep doing what you're going to do. However, you could cut your boss off at the chase and go in about an hour or hour and half before you're due to finish and say "Do you have any urgent work that you want me to do before I leave at 2pm today? I can't stay longer than 2pm so I can either make a start on it or I will schedule to do it first thing when I get into the office tomorrow. Or I'll keep going with the work that I'm already looking after"
It should show that you're open to doing the work but you need to prioritise your time and the work that is being asked of you.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 22/11/2019 06:54

Yeah at my place we build up toil but there is so much of it, you never get time to take it so basically it’s unpaid work.
