Sticky eyes every time she has a cold.

Apologies for not really an aibu but don’t get many replies elsewhere. DD is 4 and every time she gets a cold (maybe about 3-4 times during the winter months). I guess it’s her age catching colds from pre school now school but she also always gets a sticky eye.

Her cold symptoms aren’t severe and don’t really warrant a day off school but the sticky eye does as the school don’t want her there with it. Even though it doesn’t really bother her.

I’ve taken her to the doctors for repeated sticky eyes before but they say it’s viral. Shall I take her back again?

Is this normal? In between colds and bouts of sticky eyes (usually only one) she is absolutely fine!

Completely normal for us.

My 3.5 yr old often gets a sticky eye. It's the mucus not travelling through her nasal passages and coming out through her eye - so the nurse told me.

Apparently having enlarged adenoids can cause this but not a cause for concern

Thank you..

Another issue can be little ones rubbing their eyes after they have touched their nose so plenty of hand washing

fallfallfall · 21/11/2019 17:03

The nose and eyes are connected via the tear ducts. Blowing your nose extra hard will push discharge up towards the eyes.

Watching with interest. My 5 year old had conjunctivitis back in September. And sticky eyes (and sometimes a cold) ever since.

Bee29 · 22/11/2019 11:51

Thanks all. @traveller11, I took Dd to the doctors this morning and he said a very similar thing. Also to do with her tear ducts and said the sticky eyes itself isn’t contagious (obviously the cold is) so she can go to school with no problem!

I'd suggest washing hands frequently, squirt some of that antibacterial gel on their hands, wash their face with cotton balls (and throw away) - don't use flannel/sponge - and change their pillow case every night - or at least turn the pillow over and wash the pillow case every other night.

A doctor told me once that chamomile tea can clear up sticky eyes. He was right and they were pouring muck..

It stopped pouring within a couple of hours after washing her eyes every hour and the redness and swelling cleared in a few days.

Daughter gets this loads- GP suggested boiled water with a bit of sodium
Bicarbonate in- let it cool down and apply to eyes with cotton wool pad a few times a day - may be worth a try?

Fandoozle1 · 22/11/2019 13:03

*bicarbonate of soda

Thanks all. I took her to the docs this morning. After being told it’s viral for a while (it’s always with a cold). He believes it’s actually not conjunctivitis but to do with her adenoids her tear duct becoming blocked as well (I don’t know the exact terminology) So Her eyes aren’t actually contagious but obviously the cold is. I’ve sent her back to school and explained this. All sorted. I would explain a lot. He said it was more prominent in one eye for her. Also, every time she’s had a sticky eye not one of us has caught it and it seems to come and go over a week at a time or so rather than being consistent.

As for speech and language. It’s been suggested she has intensive speech therapy within clinic as speech therapist believes she ready for it after months of assessments within the classroom.

Her attendance hasn’t dropped below the threshold for the school to be concerned yet so hopefully it won’t do now 😃

Adenoids and her tear ducts *

Bee29 · 22/11/2019 13:11

Posted this on the wrong post. Also had another post about attendance!

CroissantsAtDawn · 23/11/2019 06:23

Lol bee I was wondering the link between sticky eyes and speech (DS2 has sticky eyea and needs to see a speech therapist...)

Countryescape · 23/11/2019 08:03

It's viral conjunctivitis. Happens to my son every time he gets a cold. It's just bacteria being wiped around their face basically that infects their eyes.Annoying but nothing antibiotic drops wot fix.
