...or do some adverts simply make no sense?!

Inspired by watching (another) Sunlife Over 50 Plan advert. Alan Titchmarsh is faffing with his roses then he sits, patronises the camera then pours a coffee. It starts to rain. He grabs his jacket off the back of a chair then heads off camera. He leaves his coffee and cafetière on the table. Who would do that? Does he only have the use of one arm? Don’t leave your coffee, Alan!

What other adverts make you go Hmm?

I absolutely hate the M&S advert with shrugging jumpers!
It drives me insane. How the hell they think that is going to encourage anyone to buy from them, God alone knows.

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/11/2019 19:46

I love the M&S jumper advert.

Now the food one, how many annoying people can they fit in one frame!!

Icecreamsoda99 · 21/11/2019 19:52

The Dior one with Natalie Portman having a really dysfunctional relationship with some guy, yelling and pushing him, I mean talk about an awful message! Confused

If you hate perfume ads look up Lee Mack's "perfume advert" on you tube, now everytime DH and I see one on tv we shout out "what the fuck does it smell like?" Grin

I think they have edited the Oral B one to take out the line "I didn't even know Oral B made a toothpaste", I think it was giving too many of us rage!

icantfind · 21/11/2019 19:59

The Venus adverts where women are shaving smooth legs!

FrauleinF · 21/11/2019 20:12

Like others on here a real bugbear of mine is anything marketed at "the over fiftys". Shot in black and white? Check. Doleful cornet music? Check. They all seem to hark back to some pre WWII ideal.

Last time I checked, anyone turning the big 50 this year was born in 1969. When they put a man on the sodding moon. They were young adults in the 80's for fuck's sake... facepalm

LittleSweet · 21/11/2019 21:03

The M&S jumper advert. Nobody ever 'jumped around' like that to that song.

LittleSweet · 21/11/2019 21:05

JoviaNickname, the man looks at the wife very accusingly when he talks about their debt.

backouch · 21/11/2019 21:10

Haha @Gingernaut yes! The wall crawler one!

PanamaPattie · 21/11/2019 21:16

I don't get the M&S Christmas food ad. Paddy, Emma etc just don't gel. I also don't understand the Sainsbury's Christmas ad either. What's with the oranges?

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/11/2019 21:19

My boy has done several of those dance moves @LittleSweet, no random struggling though.

grafittiartist · 21/11/2019 21:33

Misguided!!

LeslieYep · 21/11/2019 21:49

Back when payday loans started there was an ad for a glum looking family who were short of cash.

They arranged a short term loan! Yay!
And bought a ride on mower for their postage stamp front lawn..? That would definitely be my first purchase.

zemblanity · 21/11/2019 21:49

I cannot stand the deliveroo advert with the annoying woman in the horrible Beverly Goldberg jumper.

Who are all the people in the house? They can't all be relatives. Why are they there as they all seem to be doing their own thing.
Why have they all ordered different things? It must have taken hours and there's not a chance it would have all
Turned up at the same time. And then the stupid accent to make it all seem to normal and "we're one of you, honest" with "Oo ordered wings?"

Fuck off you annoying cow.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/11/2019 21:59

I'd love the old aldi adverts to be brought back.Loved the one with the couple, hes going on about liking a cuppa and she goes "but I like gin" with a cheesy grin .The one with the little girl saying she liked chips better than daddy was good too.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 21/11/2019 21:59

@WinifredTorrance @Zaphodsotherhead I saw a billboard with Johnny Depp advertising 'Sauvage', but someone had altered the 'v' to a 'u' so it read 'sausage'. Made me chuckle.

happinessischocolate · 21/11/2019 22:01

The ones on the radio where they talk extremely bloody fast, why what's the point I didn't catch a word of that mainly because I change channel the second it comes on

ArchMemory · 22/11/2019 14:31

“The creepy Coca-Cola one with the giant tongue.”

Yes. The stuff of nightmares.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/11/2019 14:44

I'd love the old aldi adverts to be brought back.
We used to buy these beans, but now we buy these beans. And they both make you trump!!!

Natalie Portman demands to her beau prove that he loves her as he claims to before he's even had chance to say it!

"This over-50's guaranteed funeral plan will ensure that my relatives have the money to pay for my funeral - or, alternatively, they can spend the money however they want." But if they choose to spend the money going out on the razz instead, there's the little matter of what they do with Grandma, if they don't arrange a funeral. Are they planning to just pop her in the wheelie bin or heave into the landfill skip at the council dump?

GertyTheGert · 30/11/2019 21:47

Back to Sun Life....... I feel sorry for any poor sod not realisin they are paying into a plan til they are NINETY YRS OLD and must NEVER stop paying, even tho the PAYMENTS GO UP EVERY YEAR FOR TWENTY YRS or until they pop their clogs. So if they stop paying before that time, they lose EVERY SODDIN PENNY. How much would a blooming funeral cost paying monthly over 20 yrs (or until you're 90) - a million?!!!! But lots of folk dont bother reaing the small print on the screen and believe alan Titchmarsh (et al) are trustworthy folk!!!!!!
Porr things .....
(Sorry I cant find me binns so maybe there are spelin erers?!!!!

RoseGoldEagle · 30/11/2019 22:30

When radio ads have the really fast talking ‘terms and conditions’ at the end, all I hear is ‘all the stuff we just told you is not really true’

Radio ads for food where they interview someone and the person talks while slurping and munching on the food (because it’s just too good) makes me shout at the radio and turn over, I don’t want to hear that!

Cherrysoup · 30/11/2019 22:46

Errh i imagine the Johnny Depp one smells of old dirt and ancient pirates.

It was my dad’s aftershave, so maybe aimed at 80 year olds reliving being 50 (ish)?! And why has he driven to the desert to bury his jewellery? In fact, why is he burying his jewellery? Is it outdated? Annoying him due to having so much of it?

The Emma Willis M&S advert: she has morphed into Denise van Outen!! Wtf?!

I don’t get the Sainsbury’s little boy (?) oranges advert. He was ostracised for not stealing and didn’t die from exposure but was turned magic by the Mary Poppins looky likey?

soupforbrains · 30/11/2019 23:05

@Gingernaut oh my god yes! That advert does my head in and gives me the rage. Which is not great as I usually hear it when I'm driving. I have since seen the 'matching' tv ad which is also shit, but at least I know what a fucking wall crawler is now.

@StayClosePooky actually I really like that advert. A lot of people stop taking prescribed antibiotics as soon as they feel better, rather than finishing the course and then later when they're ill some other way will just take the antibiotics they've held onto.

You don't do this by the sound of it, and not do I or many well informed people. But there are a lot of people who do and this is have a significant impact on the effectiveness of core antibiotics. There are many more people who ask for them from their doctors or try to insist/demand that they need them. Which is a waste of doctors time. The ad campaign is good and although it makes me sad that it is needed due to the this era of misinformation, I understand the message and why it is needed.

BiasBinding · 30/11/2019 23:05

Oh thank GOD for this thread, now perhaps someone can explain the Duracell advert to me.

Man with megaphone wants to speak to aliens, but it keeps cutting out. Helpful Duracell bunny swaps the batteries for new ones.

Hurrah, his megaphone works perfectly now!

He addresses the aliens. Then the megaphone.....er, cuts out again and the aliens train their death-rays on him.

WHAT AM I MISSING HERE? Surely it has new batteries? This is a Duracell advert! Surely they can't be saying Duracell batteries are shit? And yet......that's the message I take from this. Why would this encourage me to buy Duracell batteries?

Someone please explain, it's driving me mad

tillytrotter1 · 30/11/2019 23:09

Walk in baths fascinate me. What happens when you want to get out? Do you sit there as the water drains with all the scum sticking to you?

Tillygetsit · 01/12/2019 00:10

The sodding B&Q ad where 'Carol' tries to cook dinner for herself and random children in the shop. Why, Carol, why?????
