To think DH might have poisoned us - undercooked chicken kiev

Holidayaddict · 21/11/2019 08:30

Last night DH cooked frozen chicken Kiev for dinner. I was really hungry so had already scoffed half of it when DH declared that he didn't think it was cooked. On closer inspection, it was a bit soft & soggy but didn't really look pink (well maybe a slight tinge). Turned out it had only been in the oven 20 mins when packet said 28-32!

It"s fair to say that our oven is quite fierce and food often appears done before the stated time. However, being cautious, I always leave it in for at least the minimum recommended time, especially, chicken. DH often accuses me of cremating food but I'd rather it was a bit well done than get sick!

I"m so cross, we have a busy weekend ahead and can't afford to be ill! It's been 11 hours and so far so good. Are we out of the woods or is there still timeConfused

My DH hates any meal taking longer than 15 or 20 minutes to cook and routinely serves things up raw/frozen in the middle. I cut right through fish or chicken fillets on the plate to check before starting now.

He's done this for years, so every time it's the triumph of laziness over experience!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/11/2019 08:48

I'd think if you are not feeling squirly and queasy by now then you are out of the woods.

But I do recommend Peptobismol if the worst happens, it's really very good for "digestive issues"

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 21/11/2019 08:49

I’m no expert but if it has been me in your position I’d be waking up this morning presuming I’m out of the woods.

Allthepinkunicorns · 21/11/2019 08:52

It can take upto 2 weeks for food to pass through your digestive system and food poisoning take effect. Fingers crossed you don't get it.

JasonPollack · 21/11/2019 09:58

I think you'll be fine. That sort of thing is already cooked, you're just reheating it.

Lweji · 21/11/2019 11:14

It can take upto 2 weeks for food to pass through your digestive system

If it's not out by 2 days you have a problem!

Infection, though, can take a while, but food poisoning is usually pretty quick to show up.

SquareAsABlock · 21/11/2019 11:24

I think you'll probably be ok. Aren't freezer foods usually pre-cooked anyway, you're just basically warming them up? Could be wrong, but I doubt you ate raw chicken which is the important thing.

firsttimemum30 · 21/11/2019 13:57

2 weeks for food poisoning to appear? I'm a nurse, this is utter bollocks. Usually 8 hours so I'm sure you'll be fine Wink

Passthecherrycoke · 21/11/2019 14:00

I think you’re fine. Undercooked chicken itself isn’t a problem, it’s the bacteria’s that’s might’ve been on the chicken (salmonella and the er.... long one I can’t spell beginning with C) it’s not a given that they are on raw chicken, in fact it’s highly likely they’re not

ofwarren · 21/11/2019 14:05

firsttimemum30 it’s not utter bollocks! It can take up to 10 days depending on what caused it. www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/understanding-food-poisoning-symptoms

salmonella and the er.... long one I can’t spell beginning with C

Chlamydia innit Grin

Passthecherrycoke · 21/11/2019 14:06
Grin
Pukkatea · 21/11/2019 14:08

Campylobacter!!

As long as it wasn't cold/lukewarm in the middle it's likely fine - and you'd surely have noticed that?

Andysbestadventure · 21/11/2019 14:08

Very unlikely to get food poisoning from a frozen precooked kiev.

BendingSpoons · 21/11/2019 14:08

They are usually already cooked and need reheating. My brother once ate a breaded chicken thing straight from the fridge (not a frozen one) without cooking it.

Celebelly · 21/11/2019 14:10

Aren't frozen kievs generally already cooked?

aLilNonnyMouse · 21/11/2019 14:12

Last time I got sick from frozen chicken not being cooked properly, I ate it around midnight on a Monday, and started throwing up on the Thursday. It can take a while to kick in so you might not be out of the woods.

Mine was bright pink though, I didn't even swallow it just chewed and spat it out when I noticed it was still cold. Turns out the oven had packed in a couple of mins into cooking it.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/11/2019 14:12

This is the kind of thing I'd think about only if i actually did get food poisoning, and not give it a second thought otherwise.

PonteLaCorona · 21/11/2019 14:13

Passthecherrycoke Campylobacter. I've had campylobacter. I thoroughly recommend it if you fancy shitting uncontrollably 10 times a day for a two weeks. It didn't take long to show up though so I think your fierce oven may have saved the day!

As frozen, theres a good chance the chicken was already precooked and the timings were to ensure thorough hotness and crispiness of kiev.

Passthecherrycoke · 21/11/2019 14:16

I think my DH had it many years ago ponte- the GP said salmonella but I’m sure the C word more likely. It actually took years to fully recover from. Awful

Parmavioletgin1 · 21/11/2019 14:17

Op no need for you to be regularly cremating food, buy a digital temperature probe (about £4 in asda) and just make sure your food is above 74°c.

runoutofnamechanges · 21/11/2019 14:17

Get an oven thermometer! No more cremated food that's raw on the inside...

Montybojangles · 21/11/2019 14:17

It can take a couple of days for onset of symptoms from salmonella, so you could still become ill. Some organisms that cause food poisoning give symptoms quickly within hours, others can take days or even weeks. This is a nice clear guide..... www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/food-poisoning/symptoms-causes/syc-20356230#

Caramel78 · 21/11/2019 14:21

I’ve had campylobacter from undercooked chicken and have never been so ill. It took about 12 hours for me to start feeling ropey and a few more hours to start shitting uncontrollably. I lost 16 pounds in one week and was hallucinating. Horrendous!
If you don’t feel unwell by this evening then it’s very unlikely you have food poisoning. Good luck x

TreacherousPissFlap · 21/11/2019 14:34

Isn't the Kiev already cooked though, all he's doing is not heating it.
