To skive off work for the rest of the week as i have absolutely NOTHING to do??

RGPargy · 20/08/2007 16:19

Honestly, i am just SOOOOO bored at the moment at work! So far today i have done one expense sheet, which took me all of five minutes. And that's it. I have spent the rest of the day surfing the net and to be perfectly honest, i'm bored shitless! I did the same every day last week and the week before that and the week before that too.

It's not just me that's quiet, but in fact most of us are quiet too, due to it being August and everyone (it would seem) is on holiday.

I could be doing something much more constructive at home, like the ironing or summat!!

I get paid sick leave and go on maternity leave on 17th October.

So tell me. Should i do it??

are you in sales? what do you do?

Nip · 20/08/2007 16:22

i'm glad i'm not the only one RGP! only a few minutes before i get DS from nursery and then enjoy my day!

beansprout · 20/08/2007 16:25

Can't you speak to your manager?

RGPargy · 20/08/2007 16:25

I work in a law firm. I've never known a department to be so quiet. It's a corporate firm and i'm used to working in property which is always so very very very busy. This job is a breeze so if they want to pay me stupid money to surf the net.......!

RGPargy · 20/08/2007 16:27

Beansprout - If we're not busy, we put ourselves in the "capacity calendar" which shows others that we are able to help out. I've done all i can to show willing but there's still nothing to do! Like i said, it's not just me either. There's two of us in our little pod and we're both in cahoots as to who will take what week off sick lol.

scattyspice · 20/08/2007 16:27

Don't skive off you'd feel bad / get caught. Hang on til mat leave. (at least you're not missing any sunshine LOL)

RGPargy · 20/08/2007 16:28

Scatty - that's the thing. I wont get caught and i wont feel bad!! At least i could be getting on with something constructive at home!

scattyspice · 21/08/2007 11:32

Fair enough.
I know what you mean about wasting your time. Since I had DCs (and got really busy), I often feel work is a waste of time (unfortunately DH doesn't agree LOL).

Spandex · 21/08/2007 11:40

My boss always used to tell me to use spare time to pre empt any busy times by making sure everything in hard files and on computer were up to date blah blah blah.

I used to yawn at him but did it anyway to keep him sweet and to stop me going bonkers when it was quiet.

Or you could do your grocery shopping online?

Hurlyburly · 21/08/2007 11:51

No. It's not fair to your employer.

Why don't you find something to do? There will be something you can do that would be helpful. If not in your own team, then elsewhere.

stealthsquiggle · 21/08/2007 11:55

Is there an option to "work" at home - so you can be checking messages, email etc so that you are there if anything does come up?

Lilymaid · 21/08/2007 11:57

I work for a barristers' chambers and have organised my work so that I don't work in August (not paid either). This works very well as it coincides with school holidays. Why not work up a case for part time working like this, if you think that your workload will always be minimal at certain times of the year?

blueshoes · 21/08/2007 13:33

Good idea, Lilymaid.

RPG, don't take false sick leave - you got to have more pride in yourself than that. Do your personal stuff or whatever at your desk, tidy up desk, sort out filing, clear cupboards, put things into archives, organise stationary cupboard, do lists, handover notes.

Or take early maternity leave. Then you can iron with a clear conscience.

RGPargy · 21/08/2007 14:43

I have seriously done everything i could possibly do.

I did come into work in any event today and am still sitting here with naff all to do.

I am going to go part time when i return to work next year anyway, so that's a relief! I've only got 8 weeks to go before i give up work but they are really dragging, especially when i'm finding my brain slowly dieing and my will to live diminishing because i absolutely zilch to do at work!

zzzzzzz.........

Guitargirl · 21/08/2007 14:56

Is there nothing you can do of your own personal stuff while you're at work? I study part-time so when we have quiet periods at work I use it as an opportunity to catch up on that. But if not then there must be other stuff - as others have suggested what about food shopping online? Or seeing as you're about to have a baby, list of people to send birth announcements to, or even a Christmas card list? [GG ducks before someone gets cross - just thought that with a newborn by then you might want to do that kind of stuff now?]

PatsyCline · 21/08/2007 15:13

You couldn't pop oop North and help me get ready for my sister's visit tomorrow could you? I am sitting here avoiding the housework.

If I was in your position and had loads of time to spare in front of a PC I probably wouldn't skive off, but I might...

Write fan letters to anyone I think has produced excellent books/TV/music/art this year.

Write a short story.

Order online cards (Moonpig are good) to cover me for all the birthdays/special occasions I might forget once the baby came.

Do online window shopping with an imaginary budget of many, many thousands of pounds.

Research my family history on line.

Or how about getting some bonding going between the poor souls in your office who are not on holiday and organise a charity Bonus Ball re the Lottery? Get 50 people to take part for £1 and whoever picks the bonus ball drawn on Saturday wins £25 with the rest to charity. You'll get to know loads of people outside your pod and the bosses should approve as it's all for charity

Please tell me to go and change the bloody beds...

I have this. Mid month nothing to do. I have told my Finance Director. What else can I do. Now I browse mumsnett, sell on e-bay, write long e-mails to old friends.
Do stuff in preparation for your baby.
Have you got a will sorted ?
Have you sourced childcare ?
Now is the time to do it .

RGPargy · 21/08/2007 15:27

Patsy - go change the bloody beds!!!

Oblomov - All i have been doing is browsing on MN and a couple of other forums!

Do stuff in preparation for your baby. There's nothing much i can in prep for the baby really, unless of course i was at home.....

Have you got a will sorted ? Yup, got a will sorted, although it does need updating....

Have you sourced childcare ? Wont need to do that as MIL is having the baby when i go back to work for 2 days a week.

[Whispers again] Jingle Bells ... jingle bells ...You'll thank me in December when baby is crying, feeding constantly and you have bits of wrapping paper stuck to your eyeballs!!

RGPargy · 21/08/2007 15:43

GG - i dont really sent Xmas cards and if i do send any, i only need to buy about 5 cards.

I dont like doing my grocery shopping online coz they always give you manky alternatives if your choice isn't available. Plus we're skint and have to wait for a cheque to clear.

There is just one thing that i could here at work, which i will do and will take me a couple of hours at the most (not urgent but just filing rubbish) so i will do that shortly i think.

AAAGGGGHHHH!! BBOOOORRRREEEEDDD!!!!!

OP posts:
SlackSally · 21/08/2007 15:47

I probably would if I thought I could get away with it. That said, I think you're probably quite lucky to have so much spare time and be getting paid (in your words) stupid money. Boredom can get very trying, but I expect it's preferable to stress and exhaustion (especially if you're pregnant). I'd say just ride it out and think of the money. Plus the fact that sick leave is the sort of thing future employers always want to know about.
