The school should have told parents about tiktok in the changing room?

Y7 dd was changing for PE and two of her classmates were caught making a tiktok video in the changing room.
The whole class was pulled and given a stern lecture on internet safety, distribution of images of children etc but and here is my AIBU the school have not contacted any parents.

Do you know what happened to the video?

teenageanxy · 20/11/2019 12:32

Nope nothing, not sure what was actually caught on the video or anything else.

My dd is quite upset, she's anti social media. The school is very strict on phone use as well but we've not been told anything

What’s their policy?

teenageanxy · 20/11/2019 12:39

On phones?
Phones are not to be used on school grounds

I would want to know what was in that video.

churchandstate · 20/11/2019 12:42

Right. Well, for me, it’s virtually inevitable that there will be some breaches of policy, and I don’t believe the school needs to inform parents every time that happens. But in this case there was a possibility of young people being filmed undressed. Now, if that happened, I agree you should have been told. If it didn’t and the film wasn’t actually showing anybody naked or half-clothes, then I don’t. The trouble is that it’s not clear which it was.

cornflakegirl · 20/11/2019 12:42

I think it is to be expected that the kids would tell their parents about filming on a phone while they were changing. And entirely reasonable for the parents, and the kids, to want to know what happened to the video. So yes, I think you should have been told.

churchandstate · 20/11/2019 12:43

But either way I think this is yet another reason schools need to ban smartphones altogether.

What is tiktok

teenageanxy · 20/11/2019 12:51

It used to be music.ly

You can make short videos and post them online for people to comment on. You can lipsynch and do all sorts to popular songs. You don't have to review your videos before posting.

Whether the school was reasonable depends entirely on what the video contained. They have clearly not tried to conceal the incident and you are still free to contact them for clarification - you should do this if you’re in the least bit worried.

Schools are a fucking minefield
So are teenagers

cultkid · 20/11/2019 12:55

Oh is it like vine

Celebelly · 20/11/2019 12:59

I'd want to know what was in the video and what had happened to it. If they were just making a video of themselves and no one else was in it then I would be happy with school's handling. If they were recording other children in a state of undress, I would want to know what had happened to the video.

What did the school say when you asked?
