to be worried I'm going to get food poisoning?!

Hoping for some reassurance Sad very emetophobic!

Made some roast chicken legs (on the bone) for dinner on sunday. They've been in the fridge since then, put in the fridge about 1 hour after cooking.

I've reheated them at 200c covered in foil for 20 mins, then uncovered for 5 at same temp. I took them out as they were sizzling and steam came out when I cut into them and plated up, and left them for a couple of minutes on a cold plate while I was doing something else.

The potatoes were very hot and the inside of the chicken was mostly hot, but the outside was cool - presumably as left on cold plate in cold kitchen.

The chicken was steaming as I was cutting it but didn't taste piping hot throughout...wondering if heat escaped after I cut to see if it was cooked, and it had in fact reached a safe temperature?!

Sorry if this seems like a non problem, but emetophobia means I may be worrying about this all night Sad appreciate any reassurance!!

It sounds absolutely fine to me, I wouldn’t be worrying about it.

Polly99 · 19/11/2019 21:18

That's fine. Nothing to worry about.

Winkywoop · 19/11/2019 21:32

Thank you. DP has just got home and given further reassurance!

Now to try and convince my subconscious!

It sounds like the chicken was already cooked and then you just reheated it? If so, then you have nothing to worry about. It's when it's being cooked first time that you need to ensure proper cooking temps (raw meat) but this sounds perfectly fine.

On a side note, I've never heard of emetophobic but everyday is a school day!

Haworthia · 19/11/2019 22:10

Honestly it’s fine. You can buy cooked chicken legs in the supermarket, right? They’re good for a few days.

Iwillbemrsminty · 19/11/2019 22:13

@Winkywoop are you me? This is exactly what I do, especially with chicken. Also highly emetophobic. But it does sound absolutely fine I agree with the other posters. Smile

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/11/2019 22:42

They would have been fine had you eaten them cold from the fridge, so they're certainly find after the amount of extra heating you gave them.

Luckingfovely · 19/11/2019 22:59

It's fine. Relax. I know it's hard, but it's really okay.

IncrediblySadToo · 19/11/2019 23:03

I’m vegetarian so 🤷🏻‍♀️ but a million years ago when I still ate meat, I wouldn’t have reheated them, I’d have had them cold. Given how others around me reheat & eat meat though I’m sure you’ll be fine!

notthenormal · 19/11/2019 23:17

Just bloody eat it, I'm still on sat night kfc and living the dream

BlackeyedSusan · 19/11/2019 23:23

It is only Tuesday...

Have you not heard of the Mumsnet Magic chicken? I would still eat it cold in sandwiches until about Thursday.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/11/2019 23:24

Getting your head to believe it though is trickier..

Elle7rose · 20/11/2019 00:27

I think that sounds fine OP- 20 minutes at 200 for reheating is ok.

I am severely Emetophobic and can't even have raw chicken in the house. It can really limit your life!

Winkywoop · 20/11/2019 13:26

Thanks all, I have (so far!) survived to tell the tale Wink I reheat food a lot but this just made me nervous as the chicken wasnt 'piping hot' when I ate it, but I ate it anyway as trying to do things to overcome my fear that 'normal' people would do without thinking!!

Bless my DP, when he got home late he cooked his chicken for 15 mins at 200 and ate it slightly lukewarm to 'prove' it would be fine!

Greyt emetophobia is actually one of the commonest phobias! Of course no one likes vomiting, but it can be terrifying if you suffer from emetophobia. For some it can be really debilitating- luckily I live a pretty normal life but just have these sorts of anxieties and then panic attacks when I feel sick. Very frustrating!

mrsminty it's tiring isn't it?! I'm generally a very rational person but this is the one thing I find almost impossible rationalise.

elle I used to be terrified of raw chicken too. Couldn't even look at it. Now I am able to touch raw chicken and cut it up! Not that I enjoy it....but I'm not scared like I used to be. Sorry to hear you suffer, I wouldn't wish emetophobia on my worst enemy as I know how debilitating it can be.

Buy a meat thermometer. They're not that expensive and you can check safe temps for stuff. Saves all the worry!

Winkywoop · 20/11/2019 13:36

I have considered it mouse, but knowing my anxiety I'd sort of rather not as then I'll want to check everything and it could be a downward spiral into obsession! Or not wanting to eat out as I can't take my thermometer out to check.....I'm not at that point at the moment but would like to avoid safety nets if possible (like how the vast majority of the population manage!)

I usually reheat things until I'm 100%sure it is burning hot inside. Just didn't quadruple check last night!

If the meat was off it would have made you ill regardless of temperature. Heating only kills bacteria, it doesn't remove the toxins that those bacteria produce.
