Help - Giving up Smoking

72 replies

TheMustressMhor · 19/11/2019 15:46

I have decided to give up smoking tomorrow.

I am going on a long journey by coach and train and my GP has prescribed nicotine patches.

This will be my seventh attempt. I did give up a for nearly two years about five years ago, but started again when I was stressed. I thought one wouldn't hurt - well, that was a mistake.

Has anyone got any Top Tips? When I get to my destination I shall be staying with DD for a week. There is no smoking allowed in her house and I have no intention of going into the garden for a sly puff.

She has no DC so my clothes, which I am sure smell of smoke, won't be an issue from that point of view.

Tell me how you did it. I am determined.

Yay! Well done! Might as well keep going now that you've gone without for so long. Xmas Grin Do you feel that your skin looks more pink and healthy? I noticed this immediately when I quit and thought it was lovely. Xmas Smile You're doing so well - woot woot!

Freesunglasses · 08/12/2019 18:39

@Themustressmhor how have you found giving up? Any severe withdrawal symptoms? How many did you used to smoke and for how long?

30 year smoker here, I smoke over twenty a day and am considering giving up!

TheMustressMhor · 08/12/2019 18:42

@Freesunglasses

I have certainly had moments when I really, really wanted a cigarette, but I just kept telling myself that I had done it before so I could do it again.

I also kept (and still keep) telling myself how much money I am not wasting now.

I smoked 20 - 30 a day, for over 20 years - so it has surprised me that I have been able to keep going so far.

Give it a go.

I have Allan's Carr book here and am hoping to join you soon. Very well done!

TheMustressMhor · 14/12/2019 14:56

My painting-by-numbers set has still not arrived.

Sunglasses how are you getting on?

Haven’t RTFT but I’ve been quit nearly 2 years after champix. I was on 40 a day, and haven’t touched one since. Still stand in the fag shed at work...it’s where all the gossip is!

Freesunglasses · 14/12/2019 16:31

I'm stopping the new year, hopefully!

Freesunglasses · 14/12/2019 16:32

@TiggerOfThigh does chamonix work? I've heard people say it gave them awful nightmares.

TheMustressMhor · 17/12/2019 13:40

YAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY

A month!

I have done a month!

And I forgot to put on a nicotine patch today so for the first time, it wasn't at the forefront of my mind.

Oh - and the PBN set STILL hasn't arrived.

Well done for your month. A superb achievement. I stopped on the 22nd with an occasional vape backup, after 30 years smoking. Feel sooo much better.

windthatbobbin · 29/12/2019 18:02

Are you still going @TheMustressMhor? 7 days tomorrow for me.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 29/12/2019 18:08

I gave up in August after promising my family I would.
I do have a vape pen that I use less and less as I don’t enjoy vaping in the same way as I enjoy a cigarette but do find a couple of hits of the vape take away the craving. I plan to be vape free bs well by the summer.

SusanneLinder · 29/12/2019 18:11

Reading with interest. I'm giving up on 12th January. Am going to vape and reduce that way. Tried patches ( gave me bad dreams), am not allowed Champix ( various reasons), tried inhalation, and gum.
Also read Allen Carrs book and I personally found it preachy, so vaping it is.

ClosedTheBlueEyes · 29/12/2019 20:19

I need to give up. I've ordered the AC book so will try that.
Annoyingly the GP smoking cessation clinic is only on during the week when I'm working so I can never physically get there.
Well done everyone who's managed to give up.
It's been 20 a day for 27 years for me.

TheMustressMhor · 19/01/2020 11:43

@SusanneLinder

How are you getting on?

I am approaching nine weeks now.

I don't use the nicotine patches any more.

My painting-by-numbers set has still not arrived. I have requested a refund from Amazon.

@windthatbobbin

Are you still off the fags?

Inliverpool1 · 19/01/2020 11:47

Cold turkey worked for me. Stopped in August. Finished the packet, had to not leave the house for 48 hours to stop me buying another packet. After that it was fine, not touched one since. Every month I spend £140 on myself to remind myself what a bloody waste of money smoking was/is

notsohippychick · 19/01/2020 11:48

Hey! This has really motivated me!! Day two of Champix here but the desire is still there. Early days.

Well done!!

aNonnyMouse1511 · 19/01/2020 11:51

Champix and willpower. If I slipped up, I tried again the next day. Just kept going.

TheMustressMhor · 19/01/2020 15:21

@notsohippychick

If I can do it, anyone can. Good luck! It's worth it. You save so much money.
