To buy a house that has traffic lights outside?

Everyone I've spoken to says avoid, there is parking for 2 cars at the back, in a great area, no need to change schools, under budget and affordable.
Am I mad for considering?

I live on a bus route near a very busy junction (think dual carriageway, crossroads, multiple sets of lights). There is more dirt, but I have the bonus that no one can park outside my house with their radio on, as happened in the quieter places I lived before. The lights have the effect of slowing the traffic down, and it's really only busy in the morning and afternoon rush.

I can see the reflection of the traffic lights in my living room. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, I love the location.

I would avoid TBH .I have recently been diagnosed with Asthma ,and the Doctor thinks there may be a link with living near a main road in London when a child .The reason its cheap speaks for itself really !

narcdad45 · 19/11/2019 18:12

I'm going to be brave and post a link!

I wouldn't given the noise levels that are possible.

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/11/2019 18:19

So it’s a pedestrian crossing rather than a junction.

Assuming it doesn’t beep, then it won’t be a problem. It’s not a constant stop start like a junction.

DontCallMeShitley · 19/11/2019 18:22

I would rather traffic lights than a bus stop directly outside, but if there was constant beeping, then no chance.

FizzyGreenWater · 19/11/2019 18:22

Wow that's a real aterial road. I'm not sure, that will be very polluting.

FizzyGreenWater · 19/11/2019 18:23

*arterial

Apolloanddaphne · 19/11/2019 18:28

The house looks like it is set quite a bit back from the traffic lights. Is it a pedestrian crossing rather than at a junction? If so it will probably be okay.

IamPickleRick · 19/11/2019 18:35

Oh OP, You won’t believe this but I live soooooo so close to that house. Are you from the area and do you know the Hertford Road that well? It’s really very busy in the mornings especially at that bit because every one is cutting through to Brookfield Confused I wouldn’t do it. Love the area though Wink

IamPickleRick · 19/11/2019 18:40

It’s a main route to central London from Herts, the Hertford Road and the A10 are pretty much gridlocked every morning. They are introducing a ULEZ charge for that area soon too because of pollution from the lights on the a10 by Brookfield so that’s something to consider. I’ll PM you x

youareasyoungasyoufeel · 19/11/2019 18:53

How was the viewing tonight?

narcdad45 · 19/11/2019 19:05

House is lovely, I could hear the traffic though, I'm so confused! We have been waiting a year to buy another house (dream house) for a YEAR! That's why we've started looking again!

@IamPickleRick yes please pm me!

It's a nice house, but for me the traffic lights, single toilet in the bathroom and that the whole area is clearly a floodplain would make me look elsewhere. Why are the current family moving? That might give you a steer.

IamPickleRick · 19/11/2019 19:22

Haha, the flood plain is totally fine, it’s not flooded in hundreds of years, there are locks all along the river and special measures at Dobbs Weir and the reservoirs to stop flooding. The kayaking and canoeing was hosted there for the London Olympics, it’s very safe.

Also consider the new development at Brookfield, it’s going to become much busier. Great money for that area though, I just couldn’t live on the Hertford road. I did as a kid, on a busier part admittedly, but I’d never do it now out of choice. Could you try one of the off roads? Nearer the zoo/woods?

Flouncysinatra · 19/11/2019 19:26

I lived by a crossing on a busy road with a much smaller frontage than that and it was fine (bedroom at the front as well).

Oddly I’ve just moved from a house with a lot of trees very close to my bedroom and found the birds (parakeets) far worse than any traffic!

cacklingmags · 19/11/2019 19:35

Pollution will be terrific - I would not buy. If you have kids, their little lungs can be damaged by high pollution, and adults more at risk of alzheimers.

Ylvamoon · 19/11/2019 19:40

I used to live with permanent red traffic lights under my window...
I'd avoid at all cost.

icebearforpresident · 19/11/2019 20:07

I live on a busy trunk road with the only set of traffic lights in town about a hundred yards up the street. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I honestly don’t notice the noise but the quiet, if the traffic is diverted for example, is deafening.

If you love everything else about the house I would go for it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/11/2019 21:06

There won't be any beeping because the crossing is in two halves - they don't beep because of confusion to the visually impaired. So it's more about whether you are OK living that close to a main road.

Jennifer2r · 19/11/2019 21:37

Go at all times of day and sit outside the house for a bit. Rush hour morning and night, 10pm, 1am. Just to get an idea of how busy it really is and how noisy.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 19/11/2019 21:50

How close is the house to the traffic lights? I used to live in a house with a bus stop outside which was fine in winter with the windows closed but when we had to have the windows open in summer, the roar of buses pulling away used to wake us up from 5am (when the bus routes started). I would actively avoid the same thing again, but then the bus stop was right outside our bedroom window. Well, past a small front garden and a pavement but you know what I mean!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/11/2019 21:56

You will regret this every day. It’s not a nice enough house to make up for the traffic light issue.

narcdad45 · 19/11/2019 21:56

It's about 35-40ft from the lights, a pedestrian crossing, I could hear the traffic through the double glazing, would imagine it would be worse in summer with the windows open! Thanks for all your input, think I'll try and find a better property.
