Okay so dh is a newbie in the trade and today he is doing a tiling job for somebody and material cost had already gone £20 more than original price quoted and lady was fine about it
Today he has found that it has again incurred another 20 in material cost.
Do you think its fair to again ask for another 20 or should he let it go.

Just remember the words quite and estimation hold two different meanings especially if you’ve not seen the job in person. Quote is a set agreed price and estimate is just that, an approx cost. It will give you wiggle room whilst you get started and learn. We’ve all had to learn so little things to help the process are great. I hope the job goes well and you have a great future with the business.

Also the contingency thing, we expect to see this on big projects and our clients set their own to allow the budget to be set but if you’re just starting out and finding work this could make you more expensive than competitors and lose jobs. Using a statement that tells the client you’ve not included for unforeseen issues will also allow wiggle room if something is not as expected once the job starts. When you cost list everything including measurements so if there is a discrepancy that isn’t down to you the client has a clear picture.
