To ask about nut allergies and cake at party

My daughter’s friend has a mild nut allergy. I’m providing a separate sandwich for him at her party as the venue can’t guarantee to be nut free. My question is what to do about a cake? I want to go shop bought as I’m a terrible baker. Is there any way of buying a cake that will be nut free? Or do I need to make him a separate cupcake & inflict my baking on him? I’d be very grateful for advice from any with experience of nut allergy.

You can get nut free cakes in supermarkets.

Can you ask the child's parents? I was in a similar situation at the weekend and sent a photo of the cake ingredients etc to friend's mum - it said not recommended due to manufacturing process, rather than actual nuts in the ingredients list. The mum said her son should be fine with that, as the allergy is mild and she'd had similar without problems. My plan B was to ask if there was anything else shop bought that they knew was ok so I could get something different just for him. Parents will be used to checking and hopefully will appreciate you checking.

Shop bought cakes are there so you don't have to 😊 I'm all in favour!
Asda and Tesco do some "free from" cakes. You should be good to get nut free cakes. Check with the mum too (send a pic of cake/ingredients) and see if she's happy with the purchase. If it's a mild allergy, chances are she will have a shop bought go-to cake she uses too.

ask the parents, my DC has a mild nut allergy and does not have any issues with 'may contain traces' cakes.

My dd has a nut allergy. I always say to party hosts not to worry about whether my dd can eat the cake or not. I will check the label when I take dd to a party, but if she can't eat it, then she just doesn't. I certainly wouldn't expect the host to search out nut free cake for my dd. My dd is completely accepting of this. She knows it's important to stay safe.b

Check with the parents.
IIRC there is a brand that has a nut free factory, I think it's Kinnerton.

Thanks all, I’ll check with the parents. Thank goodness there are supermarket options!

My DD has a mild nut allergy. At allergy clinic we were told not to worry unless nuts were actually listed in the ingredients. It's easy to see as they are always in bold. It's nice when people check but I see it as my responsibility to worry about it at parties etc. I wouldn't expect anyone to go to the trouble of making anything separate. As long as the sandwiches don't have peanut butter in! The worst that would happen with my dd is that she would get hives/be itchy and might need dose of her antihistamine. Obviously I can't speak for other children but just check with the parents!

Just Love Food Company cakes are available in supermarkets, I've bought them from Sainsburys.

My DD also has a nut allergy and is also fine with "may be made in a factory with nuts" sort of warning-I think the best thing is to check with parents as there are such a wide range of allergies and I'm sure they will appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Excited101 · 18/11/2019 21:56

It totally, totally depends on the severity of the allergy. ‘Mild’ generally will mean as long as it’s not a listed ingredient then it’s fine but you must check with the parents.

Caterina99 · 18/11/2019 23:01

Myself and my DS have peanut allergies. Both of us would be totally fine with cake (or sandwiches) unless they actually contained peanuts. We are (thank god) not so sensitive that cross contamination in the factory is an issue.

Some people are that sensitive. You’ll only know by asking the parents. “Mild” allergy implies that it would probably be fine though but I’m always appreciative of people checking with me

I just want to say I think it's very thoughtful to go to the trouble.for the child who has allergies.
My grandson has severe peanut treenut mill egg allergies.
Very scary.
