To expect a pair of kids wellies to last longer than 2 fucking months

Bought my son a pair of welllies from JoJo Maman Bebe for the price of a small mortgage back back in July. After 6 weeks of light use I noticed a split in the seam at the ankle so took them back to the store and was issued a replacement, along with assurances that this was a known manufacturers fault which had now been rectified.

Lo and behold, just 2 months later the replacement pair have split, but on the sole this time. I took them back to the shop but was told that as it was on the sole is it is considered to be a result of normal wear and tear and they were therefore not prepared to issue a refund or replacement. I've since complained to the online customer service team and received the same response.

I appreciate the wellies have been worn, but surely I can expect them to withstand at least a season of use? Am I being unreasonable in feeling mightily pissed off about this?

YANBU

Try sainsburys wellies in future, we’ve still got a pair that have survived three toddlers and would probably last at least one or two more before they wear out

Orangedaisy · 18/11/2019 15:10

I’ve had jojo wellies that have split very quickly too. Whereas the ones I bought for £5 in one of those almost pound shop shoe places are on their 4th child...

Shakirasma · 18/11/2019 15:12

Not unreasonable at all. Even with daily, heavy wear a pair of wellies should last much longer than that. Maybe worth speaking to trading standards for advice as they're clearly faulty or not fit for purpose.

Try sainsburys wellies in future

Dc1 wellies from Sainsbury's lasted so well, I passed them down to dc2.

TankGirl97 · 18/11/2019 15:16

YANBU at all. Worst quality we ever bought was Clarks, they split at the seam within weeks. I usually opt for cheaper ones. Best we’ve tried so far are Crocs (I think because they have no joints or seams and are super lightweight) but they are a pita to pull off children’s feet!

Sweetooth92 · 18/11/2019 15:17

DS has a pair of little Hunter wellies. (Can usually be gotten new for less than £20 on the likes of m&m direct/eBay)
He’s been wearing his pretty much daily since March/April, for walking the dogs/splashing in puddles/playing outside at nursery and they are still going strong. We’ve struggled to get supermarket ones to stay on but they seem to fit well too (he has giant feet so the leg part seems too wide in others we tried!)

CottonSock · 18/11/2019 15:17

I've had this with the Mothercare ones, so just spent 3x the amount on a jojo pair!

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/11/2019 15:18

Jojo’s clothes are shit. If I want kids’ wellies to last I go to Joules usually. They might not always have lots of choice but what they do have lasts

Marylou2 · 18/11/2019 15:20

2 months wtf? Had the same pair of Joules wellies for ever. Joules for kids too. Always passed them on when too small. They always looked like new after a clean. JoJo MB get your act together this can't be right.

Outrageous. Get your tweet on. I won't be buying anything from them again if that's their attitude. I'm so fed up of crap customer service - but it's becoming increasingly normal.

user78912 · 19/11/2019 09:03

I suggest that you contact the retailer again and remind them that under UK law if a product develops a fault within 6 months of purchase the onus is on the retailer to prove that it was due to the customer, and not a problem with the product. If they cannot prove this they must issue a refund or replacement. After 6 months the onus is on the customer to prove a fault with the product.

www.money.co.uk/guides/your-refund-rights-explained.htm

I only learnt this myself yesterday when dealing with a company that tried to refuse me a refund for a faulty product.

jillandhersprite · 19/11/2019 09:08

Funny we had rubbish Sainsbury's ones not long ago. I kept thinking she was splashing too much and water running in from top - nope just they had a leak... Hoping the current Asda ones last a bit longer...

nocluewhattodoo · 19/11/2019 09:12

We've always bought Jojo wellies for DD, of the 3 pairs she has grown out of all of them were in good enough condition to pass on. Perhaps you were unlucky.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 19/11/2019 09:25

They are not fit for purpose and are not of a merchantable quality. If they had split on the sole after two years of hard wear then they would have a good reason but two months is not. Read up on consumer rights and go back to them. Perhaps they need reminding of uk law!

Blobby10 · 19/11/2019 09:31

I went through 3 pairs of Joules wellies in under 6 months before I accepted their quality was rubbish and the wellies were only suitable for posing at a festival rather than actually walking in the mud and wet! When my kids were little they had the Dunlop ones you get in Shoezone type places and they lasted for ages.

demelza82 · 19/11/2019 09:49

Also, Next Wellies are excellent - better even than Sainsbury's

AnnieNonaMouse · 19/11/2019 10:08

Thanks for all the advice. I certainly won't be buying from them again.

@user78912 thanks for the link. I will contact them again and let you know how I get on.
